How to know if you have low defenses (and how to strengthen them)

Children, the chronically ill, and the elderly often have weak immune systems. In children they have a good immune response, but the system is still immature. In contrast, in the elderly it is less effective. In people with chronic illnesses, immune deficiency is often a side effect of the underlying disease or medical treatment.

In young or middle-aged people, the body’s defenses must be perfectly trained and suitable for all life situations. If this is not the case and you get infections too often, it is usually due to an unhealthy lifestyle.

How do you recognize a weakened immune system?

A common and fairly sure sign that the immune system is going through low hours is the susceptibility to infections. If the body’s defenses are not working properly, bacteria, viruses and pathogens of all kinds have it easy.

Such diseases, often categorized as “banal infections”, they occur much more frequently in people with immunodeficiency. Then one speaks of an acquired or secondary immunodeficiency, in contrast to a congenital (primary) immunodeficiency.

Do you often feel weak and exhausted even without a specific infectious disease? Do you often find it difficult to concentrate on your tasks? This can also be due to a weakened immune system.

In case of suspicion, the doctor may request a Complete blood test with immune cell count.
