Persistent cough in children can be common, especially during the coldest days. But lucky for worried moms and dads, there are plenty of simple, quick ways to combat the problem. From effective drinks to gargling, from wraps to massages, it is possible to find a technique that works for your child and can be applied at any time.
We, from awesome.club, we care seriously about the health of our readers and their families, which is why we wanted to share the following tips. Don’t forget to always keep them handy!
1. Bet on milk with onions and garlic
Yes, it doesn’t sound appetizing at all, but the fact is that onions can really be useful to treat colds, coughs, high fever and sore throat. Finely chop 3 onions and half a clove of garlic. Mix everything in a liter of milk, and bring to a boil. Cook until the ingredients are soft. Then remove from heat and strain the mixture through a sieve. You can add honey to improve the taste.
2. Pineapple Juice
Pineapple is rich in a substance called bromelain, which has great anti-inflammatory properties. Fruit juice has the potential to reduce secretion in the throat and relieve coughing. However, in some cases, pineapple juice is not enough to end the problem. In such situations, you can add a little ginger and honey to the juice. Just confirm that your child does not have a pineapple allergy before using this method.
3. Ginger compress
This powerful home remedy is easy to make, using ingredients that are commonly found in almost every home. You need to mix some flour, honey, olive oil and a tablespoon of ground ginger (or powdered ginger). Put some of the mixture on a napkin or handkerchief and apply it to your child’s chest, using bandages to keep the compress in place. Do this about 3 hours before the child goes to sleep.
Heads up: Avoid using the technique on children with sensitive skin to avoid irritation.
4. Golden (or saffron) milk
The drink known as golden milk or saffron milk is a natural remedy for colds and coughs. It originated in India, where it is well known for its antiseptic properties. To prepare your own golden milk, you will need to heat up some cow’s milk and add a spoonful of turmeric powder. Stir well and give it to your child before he goes to bed.
5. Salt
Applying heat to the feet can also help with a cough. Heat some sea salt in the microwave or in a pan, but don’t overdo it, as the temperature should be comfortable for your child and not burn your child’s skin! Then apply the product on the little one’s feet and wrap it with a bandage. Wait until the salt cools down, remove everything and put the child in warm socks.
6. Prepare a salt water gargle
A gargle is able to relieve the symptoms of a sore throat. Just add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a glass of water (preferably lukewarm), and stir well until dissolved. For even better results, you can add a teaspoon of baking soda to the solution.
Tip: it’s best to use the gargle technique on older children, as younger children may end up swallowing the water or accidentally choking.
7. Steam bath
A good steam bath can help relieve coughs at night, as it loosens the secretions that get trapped in the airways and cause coughing. You can turn on the hot shower, close the bathroom door and wait until the room is filled with steam. Afterwards, it’s just your child to go in to take a shower. For best results, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to your shower steam.
8. Mix bananas, water and honey
This solution is able to relieve coughs caused by bronchitis. First, you will need to boil some water. Then, peel the bananas and mash them, making a puree. Put the mashed banana in a pan and add the water. Leave to infuse for 30 minutes. Afterwards, just wait for the mixture to cool down and add a spoonful of honey. Give 100 ml to your child 4 times a day.
9. Use a humidifier
Problems like bronchitis, colds and flu can be less traumatic if you use one of those humidifiers that release a mist of fresh air into the room. Dry air enhances the transmission of infections and viruses, while humidity works as a protection against them. You can also add some medications to the humidifier water so that the child inhales the substances and obtains better results for their health.
