Healthy wines: discover the best options –

To drink wine in moderation has many health benefits. Drinking a glass daily is recommended by Academy of Nutrition and Dieteticsfrom the United States and by the international publication of medicine Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine. Red wine is especially rich in phytochemicals (chemical compounds from plants), including resveratrol and quercetin, powerful antioxidants associated with a host of health benefits, including alleviating arthritis and protecting against heart disease.

in the bestseller food health (buy it here), the physician and specialist in holistic practices David Friedman explores cultures living longer, healthier lives around the world. One of the similarities between these peoples, according to epidemiological studies analyzed by David, is the consumption of red wine.

THE FRENCH PARADOX

When you think of the French way of life in terms of cuisine, what comes to mind is: lots of bread and cheese, right? Two things we are always told to eat in moderation. However, they are still studied as one of the peoples who have the greatest longevity.

“French paradox” is the term that sums up the paradoxical observation that the French have a relatively low incidence of heart disease and live longer, despite having a diet relatively high in saturated fats.

But once again wine appears as one of the justifications: the French have the habit of consuming the drink on a daily basis.

BENEFITS OF WINE FOR HEALTH

While alcoholic beverages, in general, are known to harm the liver, a polyphenol found in red wine called ellagic acid has actually been shown to improve liver health — white wine, on the other hand, is not as healthy and has recently been associated with causing skin inflammation problems and a higher incidence of cancer compared to people who drink red wine.

“The secret of the drink is in the grape”, explains the food engineer Gislaine Santana, who unravels some of the substances most present in the drink and how they benefit health:

Polyphenol: good for the heart

“This substance is well known for protecting against chronic diseases, heart disease and controlling blood sugar levels”

Resveratrol: skin’s ally

“The more intense the color of the wine, the greater the amount of this substance. The micronutrient forms a protective film on the skin, so to speak, which fights free radicals, delaying premature aging.”

Nitric oxide: good for digestion

“One of the reactions caused by the consumption of grapes is the release of nitric oxide, an essential substance to relax the stomach walls. So a cup of wine before or after meals enhances the absorption of nutrients from food.”

Procyanidin: ally in cancer prevention

“Some studies link procyanidin as a substance that not only prevents cancer, but also reduces the side effects of chemotherapy on health. This substance has antioxidant properties that protect cells, also present in grapes.”

WINE HARMFUL

But not everything is flowers — or fruits, literally. Although the grape is extremely beneficial for health, wine still contains other substances that harm health and, when in greater quantity, may even speak louder than the benefits of drinking.

The most obvious of these is alcohol. “Having fun is essential but, for health, controlling the intake of alcoholic beverages is essential”, warns the nutritionist Luanna Caramalac Munaro. “Of course the wine has its health benefits, already proven by many researches, even so, the consumption must be of one cup to the day”, he points out.

Another problem is the amount of sugar. As a general rule, the drier the wine, the healthier it is for you. Sweeter wines have more sugar and are not as healthy.

Thinking about all this, some brands are already working with healthier classifications of wines, from vegan to low carb.

Attention!

As the representative of the Wine brand points out, believing that a wine is “healthier” does not endorse the consumption of alcoholic beverages in excess and without the endorsement of a health professional. The objective of this article is to show alternatives to the conventional drink, according to the objective or restriction of each one.

Organic Wine

When we talk about Vegan, Organic, Natural, SO2 free wine, we are referring to the process of making the drink. That is, stages of grape cultivation and/or winemaking that do not use certain additives.

In the case of organic winess, pesticide additives are not used in the cultivation of the grapes that will give rise to the wine.

But be careful: an organic product is not always healthier than a conventional one, as the producer can still use additives in the canteen or in the vineyard. Below, we have selected one that has the selection thought of at all stages of the process:

vegan wine

Although the basic inputs are vegetable, several ingredients of animal origin are used in wine production. An example is the use of albumin, a protein derived from egg whites, or from ichthyocolla, a substance extracted from fish, when filtering the drink.

“Even if these materials are discarded at the end of the process, from a vegan point of view, it is animal exploitation”, as explained by journalist specializing in veganism Juliana Vaz. You vegan wines use technology with flocculants of vegetable or chemical origin, both approved by Anvisa, to filter the drink.

Fermentation, the primordial process of wine production, tends to generate SO2. Therefore, it is believed that today most wines have between 50 and 200 mg/l of these sulfites.

However, some people are allergic to this compound. SO2 free wines undergo a process to minimize sulphite production, resulting in a drink with less than 10 milligrams of sulfur per liter. This requires very high levels of hygiene in the winery, as well as constant monitoring of all stages, so that the wine does not run the risk of spoiling, since SO2 is also a preservative.

Low Carb Wine

As explained, in general, dry wines have less sugar and, consequently, less carbohydrates. But wine will never have zero sugar.

That’s because the sugar in the wine has a function: during fermentation, the yeasts feed on the natural sugar in the grapes to produce ethanol. If you were to transform 100% of the sugar into alcohol, the result would be an extremely alcoholic and unhealthy drink.

Sweet wines go through a much shorter fermentation process and therefore leave more sugar behind. If your goal is to reduce consumption of the ingredient, opt for white – but always in moderation, since, as mentioned, it is more alcoholic than sweet.

Indications:

To reduce the alcohol content of Alibea, a tangential filtration process (reverse osmosis) is carried out, which consists of separating the water from the wine. Then the water solution It is alcohol goes through a distillation that separates the elements It is then the water is added back to the wine.
