Gym clothes: how to wash the pieces correctly –

Who never bought a swimsuit or other gym clothes and, after a while, noticed that it was looser in some parts? Or else, did he lose a colorful blouse because it faded? For those who work out frequently, this type of occurrence is very common, but don’t think that there is no solution. The big trick may be how to wash the parts correctly!

“All products come with a washing method. You can find this information on the label. But because the procedures are difficult to translate, people hardly even look at the instructions. As a result, they end up wearing out the parts, losing technology and functionality”, he explains. Carla Fischerdevelopment manager at Mizuno apparel.

Currently, the fabrics most used in sports are synthetic fibers: polyester, derived from petroleum and polyamide, which is present in almost 90% of products. These are the two materials that have the best results when we apply technologies to shirts, socks, shorts.

The tightest pieces, such as leggins, tops and swimsuits use elastane, which is nothing more than a fabric with more elasticity and compression. Therefore, they are tighter to the body. “The technology, present in the construction of the fabric or in the finishing, was developed to facilitate the exercise. If you don’t take care of fabrics, wear and tear is inevitable. Over time, clothes lose their functionality and color, ”he says.

Were you curious to know how to take care of your gym clothes? Carla teaches some simple tricks for washing and preserving the pieces:

1. Never store wet sportswear

“You can even leave it in a baggie after training, but that can’t take too long. Excess water damages the fibers in your garment and causes them to wear out faster,” she explains.

2. Bet on neutral soap

For a garment to absorb sweat and still be lightweight, it must have delicate fabrics and contact with powerful cleaning products can damage the garment. Softeners, for example, block the “breathability” of the garment. “Smothering the fabric causes it to lose its sporting goods principle, which is to absorb sweat and then let it out. This goes for polyester and polyamide. Softener is only for clothes made with cotton”, he reveals. The choice of soap also affects the colors. To maintain a neon hue, for example, you cannot use strong products, so the option is neutral.

3. Twist the parts? Never!

After washing clothes, the right thing is to squeeze. That is, place the piece between your hands and give it a slight squeeze to remove excess water. “If the thread is sensitive, over time, it starts to get softer and without its original structure. When you twist, you are breaking the fibers. And that shortens the shelf life of the product,” he says.

To make your life easier, we made a step by step on how to wash the parts:

If you just got out of swimming:

1. Remove excess chlorine by using cold water in the swimsuit.

2. Squeeze the part — no twisting.

3. You can store it in a bag, but that’s only until you get home. Don’t leave it all day.

4. Wash the parts by hand and with neutral soap. After all, it’s not good to throw your bikini in the washing machine.

5. Now you can put it to dry

If you wore a top and leggings to training:

1. The fabrics of these garments should preferably be hand washed or you can put them in the machine on delicate mode. Remember to use mild soap.

2. Squeeze the part. If you opted for the machine, don’t leave it until the spin process. “Since the threads are delicate, the action is as if the clothes were being beaten by the machine”, explains Carla. You can already imagine the result, right?

3. You can lay it out to dry.

About the socks…

They cannot be centrifuged. Generally, the top (or sock cuff) is wider, because that’s exactly where the elastane is concentrated. You must look at the instruction on the label to maintain the quality of the product. Sometimes the technology cannot receive fabric softener, for example. So keep an eye on the information.

Buy the right parts
