It is not by chance that free embroidery has become increasingly successful. Present in home decor and a real darling on Pinterest, it’s not difficult to learn and lets you unleash your creativity. Want to know more? Keep reading this post to know the stitches and materials needed, as well as tutorials and beautiful photos.
Materials: what you need to start embroidering
The cool thing about free embroidery is that you don’t need a lot of materials to start your creations. The items are basic, inexpensive, and easy to find. Follow:
- Skein thread: skein thread, also called mouline, is the most common for this type of embroidery. However, you can also use other types, such as traditional sewing thread.
- Sewing needles: it is necessary to use a needle that sticks, as free embroidery is not usually done on fabrics with holes. Number 7 and number 9 sewing needles are good initial investments.
- Sewing Scissors: Scissors will be needed to cut the threads. You don’t need special scissors, as long as they are well cut and have a fine point.
- Raw cotton fabric: cheap, it is usually chosen because it is neutral and has a light starch, which makes the fabric firmer.
- Hoop: although not essential for free embroidery, the hoop is often used. There are plastic and wooden models – the latter is beautiful to decorate the house.
See how there’s not much mystery in terms of the materials list? And you can still make small substitutions, try out the gadgets you have at home and start your creations.
What are free embroidery stitches?
Don’t be fooled by the name “free”: this embroidery does have some commonly used stitches. Below, you learn which are the most common – and how to do them too.
back stitch
Great for contouring, the backstitch is a good choice for anyone starting to venture into the world of embroidery. It is made backwards and hence is known by that name.
current point
Chain stitch requires a little more skill with the needles: you need to make small loops with the thread. Don’t worry: the video on the Bordado Arte channel teaches everything in detail.
full stitch
The solid stitch is often used to fill small figures. The video above shows great tips that help when embroidering, how to make small lines using a pen.
After you learn the basic stitches of free embroidery, it’s worth getting a little more specialized and learning the hue stitch, the rod stitch, the Pekingese stitch, the lollipop stitch and the bounce stitch.
