We at Incrível.club conducted our own research and discovered the most common first and last names in the world. The result was quite revealing.

The most popular surname in the United States is Smith. More than 2 million Americans have the last name Smith. But not only the United States can boast of the frenetic popularity of this surname. Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and other English-speaking countries are literally full of Smiths – would be the Silvas there, but they aren’t, as we’ll explain in the bonus. Johnson follows close behind; a little more and they would have been number one in our rankings.

As for the most popular American names, they haven’t changed in the last 100 years. Saint James and Emma.

What is the last name of most Russians? Responding quickly, many will say “Ivanov” and be wrong. Today, the most common surname in Russia is Smirnov. Ivanov now ranks second among the most popular surnames. In Russia, most men are called Aleksandr, and among women, the most common name is Anastasia.

The Chinese surname Li is the most popular in the world. No less than 100 million Chinese carry it on their birth certificate. Even in Canada, people called Li rank first. Apparently, the Chinese don’t tolerate much diversity in this regard because they don’t have many surname variants: just over 100.

Germans are very fond of complex compound names, after all, this is a Catholic tradition. But the most popular names are still pretty simple: Ben and Emma.

In distant and mysterious Japan, most people bear the surname (you might also guess…) Suzuki. The second most popular is Sato. Coincidentally, the surnames of two famous Japanese-Brazilian personalities, actresses Daniele Suzuki and Sabrina Sato. The Japanese are very romantic: the most popular family names are names of picturesque places and landscapes in the country: “little forest”, “rice field” … Yes, they are true leaders in poetic names.

As for the first names, according to the latest data collected, the most popular today are Minato and Sakura.

A traditional Brazilian has the surname (guess what…) Silva or Santos. Most of the country’s first and last names have Portuguese roots, and that’s not surprising. If you are a Silva and have already researched, the word means ‘jungle’, which, when the country was discovered, occupied a significant part of our territory.

On this special IBGE website it is possible to search for the most popular names, including the region of the country.

Dlamini and Ntuli, these are typical South African names. Most residents of Cape Town, Johannesburg and its surroundings are called Junior and Imanati.

One of the languages ​​spoken in South Africa is Ndebele, and in it, the name Imanati means “to ask God to protect the baby from danger”.

South African fathers and mothers love to give their children big, meaningful names: Bless (blessed), Gift (gift), Precious (jewel), Princess (princess).

“It’s complicated”, people in India would say about their surnames, and it’s true: the society’s caste system and the large number of nationalities really make life difficult for those who decide to research the subject.

Contrary to popular belief, Kumar is not the most common surname in India; the leading ones by a wide margin are Devi and Singh. Indians are very religious, but at the same time heroic and glorious, and this is reflected in their names: Singh means lion; Khan, king; Devi, honors the goddess Devi, &c.
