Every year, new dermatological procedures appear with the aim of benefiting women and men who want to take care of their skin and body with the intention of maintaining their health and improving their quality of life.

The Brazilian aesthetics market showed potential for growth even before the Covid-19 pandemic, and, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Industry and Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics (ABIHPEC), it represented a 567% rise between 2014 and 2019.

Botox and filling with hyaluronic acid are examples of the various dermatological procedures that have been conquering people of different ages, as they are effective in preventing the signs of aging, treating wrinkles and expression lines and filling in dark circles and lips.

It is essential to warn that both have different purposes. Botulinum toxin, the active principle of Botox, is derived from a bacteria that has direct action on the muscles. The application is indicated to reduce the exaggerated contraction of the muscles of the face, and can be applied on the forehead, periocular region, the terrible ‘crow’s feet’ and on the glabella, region between the eyebrows”, highlights Fayruss.

Hyaluronic acid is considered a biocompatible active due to the fact that it is a natural component produced by the body. The dermatologist points out that this feature makes the component adapt well to the skin.

“Although it is naturally supplied by the body, the production and concentration of hyaluronic acid decreases with age, so regular maintenance is necessary”, says Fayruss.

“The role of this acid is important, due to its ability to retain water and keep the different layers of the skin hydrated. In addition, it helps in the repair and growth of skin cells”, says the doctor.

In addition to being able to apply it in a preventive or reparative way, Botox has benefits related to smoothing and preventing wrinkles. “It also plays a non-aesthetic role, being widely used in the treatment of excessive sweating control”, he adds.

Application methods

The application of hyaluronic acid can happen from the use of small needles or cannulas, a kind of tube that resembles the needle, but does not pierce the skin. In the case of Botox, there is also the use of thin needles that concentrate small amounts of toxin in areas of the face.

“The method of application of both procedures is practically painless and, normally, local anesthetics are used, so that the process is more comfortable for patients”, points out Costa.

According to the dermatologist, the durability time of botulinum toxin varies according to the skin type and application region. However, on average, it lasts from three to five months.

“I usually tell my patients that it is necessary to perform the procedure two to three times a year, on average, to understand the response that each organism. But normally, when the wrinkles start to reappear, it’s the right time to reapply,” he indicates.

Hyaluronic acid has a longer durability, reaching one year. However, the doctor emphasizes that the durability of this asset also depends on the region applied. “For example, the lip is a very mobile region, which can last for a shorter time when compared to dark circles, which can prolong the result for about a year and two months”, she says.

In order to have Botox or hyaluronic acid filling, it is essential to undergo an evaluation before, during and after carrying out dermatological interventions. The choice of professional is also relevant, as he must be trained in aesthetics, such as dermatologists, plastic surgeons and beauticians.

Fayruss warns that there are contraindications for hyaluronic acid and botox for pregnant women and patients who are treating serious illnesses or who have skin lesions where the procedure would be performed.

“Both procedures can be applied to any skin type or phototype, that is, any skin tone and at all ages. However, it is essential to emphasize that, when dealing with sensitive regions, such as the skin of the face, the professional must pay attention to care in the application and throughout the treatment”, he concludes.
