Giovanna Ewbank saw her daughter for the first time in 2015, during a visit to an orphans’ shelter in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital. At the time, she thought she was not ready to be a mother, but everything changed with the first hug between the two.

“It was as if we were meeting again. As if God had sent me there to find my daughter again”, said Giovanna.

According to Giovanna, Bruno was already more prepared to be a father in 2015. Determined not to leave Malawi without Títi, the actress said she called her husband and said: “I found my daughter”. And his answer was: “So I feel like her father”.

The family’s trajectory from the first meeting seems cinematic. The procedures for intercountry adoption had to be done in Titi’s country of origin and the process should be confidential. Over a year and a half, the two made more than ten trips to Lilongwe. Every time the judge got in touch, the couple dropped everything and traveled to Africa in the hope of bringing their daughter to Brazil soon.

Giovanna and Bruno kept the adoption a secret. To throw off the curious, they posted photos on social networks as if they were in Rio when they went to Malawi. They also said that Títi’s room, which had been waiting for the girl for a year, was closed for “renovation”.

“It was a painful process because we knew we could provide better conditions for our daughter. The food there was porridge”, said Giovanna. “They threw the plate of food on the floor as if the children were dogs,” Bruno recalled.

Despite the inspiring and difficult story, the matter generated controversy after the adoption became public.

Some of the netizens defended the couple on social media, talking about the noble act of adopting a child. But others criticized, remembering that there are thousands of orphans in Brazil in need of a home. According to statistics from the National Council of Justice (CNJ), there are more than 9,500 children currently available for adoption.
