Everything changes, nothing stays the same

It’s half past seven in the morning and the alarm clock rings. We get up to clean up, have breakfast, get dressed and go to work. The car doesn’t start. We take the bus and arrive at the office. A colleague has caught a cold and can’t come. We sit in our chair and turn on the computer. It’s time to eat and we eat. We leave work at 6:00 p.m. and go to the gym. We get a little stronger, shower and get home. We prepare dinner, watch TV and go to bed. End of the day. Have you noticed that everything changes?

A very normal day in anyone’s life. A routine from Monday to Friday. So it is not surprising that we hear phrases like: “I need a change in my life.” However, The change is there, we just don’t see it. And I’m not talking about a change of life, but rather the permanent change of everything that surrounds us. Because in this concept, Although it is difficult for us to believe it at first, a large part of human suffering is hidden.

and everything changes

For everything to be carried out in our daily lives, change is necessary. The hours of the day change, we change from being asleep to being awake, from wearing pajamas to wearing street clothes, from being in the office to being in the gym, etc. Although these changes may seem trivial, We are not aware of the potential of being aware of them. And not only conscious, but internalizing them.

No one is surprised by the fact that to turn on a light we have to press a switch. We are also not too surprised when we start to grow gray, although some take this change worse. But what does light have to do with gray hair? Everything is in constant movement, everything changes. The first change is on an electrical level and the second on a human level, but they are changes after all.

When we have a job and we are told that we are going to be fired, we generally tend to interpret it as something negative. When a family member dies we get sad. If our partner is no longer the same as when we met them, we feel like we are with another person. All these changes represent a shock, to a greater or lesser extent, in our lives..

Resistance to change

The root of suffering lies in resistance to change. We flatly refuse to accept that certain aspects of our lives can change. We want to think that our parents will always be there, that our friends will never fail us, that our partner will be the same as at the beginning of the relationship, etc. When we like something, we hold on and are not willing to let it go..

“The superficial changes, the deep also changes, the way of thinking changes, everything in this world changes…”.

-Everything changes, Mercedes Sosa-

So that, The fundamental aspect on which much of our suffering lies is not the change itself, but our opposition to it. Perhaps it would be ideal to be able to enjoy everything we have for as long as we want, but life sometimes offers us other types of plans that we have to accept and integrate.

Accept the change

What can we do when change bursts into our lives? accept it. At first glance, it may seem cruel. For example, accepting that our loved ones are going to die can cause emotional conflict for many, since they may interpret it as an invitation to love them less because one day they will be gone. But it is by no means something like that. We must enjoy what makes us happy while we have it, but knowing that one day we may not have it. Clinging only leads to suffering.

“Life is simple when you accept that it is complicated. “Life is complicated when you think it should be simple.”

-James Low-

We must begin to think that life is synonymous with change. Nothing remains, everything changes. Some things last longer, others less. Thus, wanting to prevent something from changing at all costs will lead us to suffering, because sooner or later, it will change. Therefore, maintaining an open attitude to change will lead us to be freer and happier. The attitude is not “I will stop loving my loved one because one day they will die,” but rather “I know that one day my loved one will be gone, but as long as they are there I will enjoy them.”

That which is beyond our control

Even though we seem to have many aspects under control, something can go wrong. We plan an event to the smallest detail but on the big day something goes wrong. We rehearse the presentation of a faculty project in front of the mirror and when we are in front of the teacher and our classmates we get stuck in the simplest thing. Everything, absolutely everything, is subject to error, and this is, ultimately, change. We had the expectation of a concrete result in our minds, however, it comes out differently.

An error also represents a change because it implies that what we do does not turn out the way we want. We must be aware that in our daily lives we will experience events different from those we had planned and this happens because Change is an inherent fact in life, in nature. So it is important that we remember that everything changes.
