Empty chairs, when Christmas is tinged with nostalgia

Table set. Empty chairs. Broken relationships. Separated families. Christmas, a time of merriment and reunions, is tinged with nostalgia, sadness, anguish, and restlessness. The glow of these dates no longer exists. We no longer anticipate joy from our couch.

Not anymore. There are no sparkles because someone is missing, because everything changes so much with the passing of the years that we lose the wonderful illusion that invaded us as children, we no longer maintain the innocence that then made us enjoy any small detail, because any trifle was full of magic. unbreakable that the grudges and absences of the now do not allow us to enjoy.

Why is it that in these moments that sadness invades us? Those moments when the holidays approach and the preparations, gifts, decoration and choosing a menu begin is when memories fly and plan our minds. We can’t avoid it. The power of Christmas convocation makes us notice more the absences, the chosen ones and the unexpected ones.

How many are we on the 24th? And the 25th? Who is coming and where am I going?

How many are we on the 24th? And the 25th? Who is coming and where am I going? Inescapably, when faced with these questions, empty chairs appear. Empty chairs that correspond to people who are not there, people who have moved away or people who have died. Memories of times lived, times that we now feel happier, fuller, more ours than those to come and, of course, those of now.

“The person who is far away, the one whose life took another path, the one who chose not to be there, the one who became enemies, the one who took death.” Empty chairs that, although no one physically occupies them, accompany us on these dates to transfer suffering to the present moment.

A suffering that we kept anesthetized, asleep by the daily routine of life. And yes, empty chairs hurt, they fill our eyes with tears, our soul with pain and contained hugs that run out of bodies to grab.

They hurt, yes. But there is a space in the empty chairs to embrace, to accept and to name without suspicion. I say without hesitation because we cannot forget that, Although we can cry for the empty ones, the busy ones deserve our smile.

It is not necessary that we force ourselves to be happy, but it is a good idea to seek a state of peace and calm. Fear, anger and sadness are not perennial, although they cause fear in us.

Christmas is a contradiction

Christmas is a contradiction in itself. The magic generated by sharing moments and reconnecting suddenly collides with the affliction that absences make us feel.the longing for the deceased person or the resentment for an empty chair chosen or caused by the disagreements of the year we closed and the years that have passed.

In this sense It is very important that those present speak naturally, that that feeling is taken from the heart. Because otherwise the shadow of the empty chair will spread a contradictory mood and an atmosphere of broken words will be created.

We cannot ignore that there are empty chairs, but neither can we ignore that there are occupied chairs, full of presence and love. Probably not all occupied chairs provide us with well-being, but that should not detract from the possibility of enjoying the chairs that we like. Let us remember that life, by definition, will at some point separate us from the chairs we adore today.

So on these dates, marked for some and relegated for others, We cannot forget to toast everything that is offered to us. Because it is always good to raise the glass and be grateful that our heart continues to beat. Giving peace to the occupied chairs and remembering good times when the empty chairs were between us.
