Eggs – The Witchcraft

Eggs are powerful spiritual symbols in almost every tradition, although their specific meaning varies. They are small packages of potential that contain everything needed to create life in a protective cover. An egg symbolizes life, birth, perfection and even the universe. The egg contains life, it is Life, but it is not a living being and this makes it a powerful magical tool.

Some traditions identify the egg as the source of everything Live and mark the beginning of creation with the creation or hatching of a cosmic or divine egg and while few of these traditions have come to dominate the cultures from which they emerged, they can be found throughout the world. The ancient Greek Orphic egg hatched from Protogonus or Phanes who created all other gods. Chinese mythology shows a story similar to Pangu dividing his egg in half, the upper part to create the sky and the lower part to create the earth. The Hindu text Brahmanda Purana describes the cosmos in the context of an egg. In ancient Egypt, some traditions describe the universe and/or Ra as being born from a goose egg. Finnish mythology describes the egg of a duck (or an eagle) laid on the lap of Ilmatar (or Väinämöinen) and used to create the world. The Kalevala describes this.

Eldred Thorsson described the Cosmic Egg as the fertile void from which all things sprang and the home of the primordial beings Ymir and Auðumbla, and likens it to the rune Hagalaz, “hail,” symbolizing disruption and chaos, as well as potential.

The egg features in many modern traditions in Charms, and would have been a common ingredient in ancient folk traditions as well – even if you don’t keep birds, you can often find an egg if you know where to look and your timing is right- and folk magic is about using what you have on hand. The most notable modern techniques are found in hoodoo and other synergistic traditions of America, but they are found across traditions.

The egg is a symbolic womb that can be fertilized by your intentions. Appropriately charged, the egg can then be broken to release intention into the universe, buried to draw energy to a place, or buried with intention in charging ground-grown plants, or being eaten to internalize the intention. ) In all cultures there are different methods of divination from the accidental to the more intentional. A randomly found double-yolk egg can be taken as an omen or either good luck or bad luck, depending on the culture, and signifies marriage or birth or death. A girl who wants to determine who will be her future husband can put an egg on a fire and watch who moves or removes it, or boil an egg, remove the yolk and replace it with salt, eat the salty white and her dreams watch to glean this information.

Currently, the most common form of egg divination involves cracking an egg into a glass or bowl of water and observing the shapes it forms, either immediately or over a period of time. Traditions vary widely on the specifics of the method. The egg can be passed over a person’s body or left near the person before cracking. It can be read immediately or left to rest in the water for a period of time after cracking before reading.

Egg cleaning, healing and hex breaking

There are many traditions of using eggs to cure a lingering illness, remove the evil eye, cast out disturbing spirits and energies, and break hexes. Various techniques involve using the egg to draw the disease or unwanted energies from a body or space into the egg itself. The egg is then disposed of by burying it or breaking it into running water at a crossroads at the base of an old tree, or flushing it down the toilet. Many techniques used in modern folk magic are variations on the limpia techniques practiced by curanderos and brujas, which may have come down to us from the Aztecs.

Spells to remove disease, hexes, or the evil eye from the body may involve rubbing or rolling the egg across the body (see Rolling the Egg), starting at the head and working down. Or the egg may be placed under the affected person’s bed while they sleep, occasionally in a container of water. It is also reported that one breathes or blows on the egg to transfer the bad luck to it. Any combination of these techniques can also be used.

To remove negative energy from a place, the egg can be placed in the center of the room, sometimes whole or in a bowl with cracked water, or four eggs can be placed in the four corners of the room.

After treatment, the egg can be broken and its contents examined to determine the success of the treatment. Imperfections in the yolk and white of the egg may indicate that some but not all of the negative energy or disease has been drawn into the egg, and the treatment can be repeated as many times as needed until the egg is clear. Banish Egg Spell

Banishing spells can be found with eggs, specifically within the various branches of summoning. While specifics vary, it often involves breaking an egg near the person’s home — at the person’s front door or porch, or throwing it on or over the roof to break it — to get them to do it to move away. Some modern alternatives include breaking the egg in the driveway, at an intersection near their home, or on a picture of the person. Some spells require the egg itself to be rotted or laid by a black hen and/or involved in some way

The eggshell is a hard protective covering that protects a developing life from the dangers of the outside world. This shell is also used in magic to protect people, objects, and places from various dangers, especially those emanating from the spirit world.

An eggshell may be hollowed out and a taglock and other items placed inside to symbolically protect the person(s) identified by the taglock. The shell can be colored or decorated to represent this intention, or it can be left plain.

Eggshells pulverized to a fine powder can be used as a general protective powder, sprinkled on people and objects, and over doors to prevent ghosts and people with malicious intent from affecting them or entering the room. (See Cascarilla powder).

Colored eggs are a popular decoration for Ostara and Easter every spring. These are reminiscent of agricultural and even hunter-gathering systems, which recognize the egg as a valuable food source that suddenly becomes plentiful in spring, when the breeding season of many bird species begins. Many birds, most wild birds and even some native species such as geese, only lay eggs for a short time in the spring, and even our trusty chickens and ducks often hibernate over the winter (although modern techniques, including artificial lighting, can prevent this). Therefore, the spring reappearance of eggs is a significant event worth celebrating. Why not decorate and share with friends? And why not consider them powerful symbols of good luck, fertility, and abundance while we’re at it.

Colored eggs are included in spring celebrations of many cultures. Painted eggs appear in the Persian New Year celebration of Nowruz, celebrated on the March equinox. Novruz has its roots in the Zoroastrian tradition, although in many areas it has become more of a common cultural observance. In some areas the celebration has merged with the Christian celebration of Easter, and the Easter egg custom may have derived from the Persian custom, probably beginning with and spreading from the Greek Orthodox Church.

Pysanka is a highly detailed and ritualized method of dyeing eggs using a beeswax resist method to create traditional folk patterns on eggs practiced in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Although popularly associated with Easter eggs, pysanka is a pre-Christian art form that may have been associated with the worship of the Ukrainian sun god Dazhboh. Pysanky are exchanged and held, and general lucky talismans to protect the household from all kinds of calamities. They could be decorated in spiral patterns to trap demons, or spiritual motifs and blessed by a priest to locate and cast out demons. A broken or unwanted pysanka must be ground very finely and thrown into running water or fed to the hens as this would make them good layers. Such a pysanka in the wrong hands could be used to curse the family. Pysanka are traditionally made in secret by the women of the family, ideally from the first fertilized eggs laid by young hens.

Krashanky are eggs boiled and dyed a single color, traditionally a reddish color made from red onion skins, which are then ritually blessed by a priest and eaten to internalize the blessing. Although these are perhaps the best-known folk methods of dyeing eggs, many other methods are practiced in this region.

In modern magical and spiritual practice, colored eggs can be blessed or charged and eaten to internalize magic. They can also be placed in a location or buried underneath to direct their blessings to the location. The eggs can be decorated and colored in symbols and colors that represent the intent of the spell. Given that the dyes and other decorations applied to the eggs are non-toxic and biodegradable, colored eggs provide suitable offerings to many nature and land spirits.
