Discover the relationship between focus and success

Hello friends!

There are many definitions of success and many definitions of focus. For the purposes of our text, I define success as achieving a measurable goal and focus as the ability to focus on one thing, the most important thing at which we want to succeed.

In this year that we are ending today, the most important book I read was The only thing. You can learn more about it by clicking on this text I wrote about: Do you want to be successful? Learn the one thing rule

This book was important to me for several reasons:

First, I deeply understood that success is not instantaneous (although sometimes we feel that it is), that is, in order to achieve a certain result, we have to have a project and carry out this project with behaviors that follow one another over time.

For example, if I want to lose 10 kilos, I’m not going to lose 10 kilos overnight, right? To reach the final goal (in this case, already measured from a given goal) I will have to lose 1 kilo at a time – in fact, grams at a time – until success is achieved.

Second, with the book, I stopped trying to multitask and even stopped being focused on hundreds of simultaneous projects. For an intuitive person, in the Jungian sense, the most difficult thing is to stop being dazzled by the millions of undeveloped possibilities and always turn attention to projects that are already in progress.

Therefore, stop doing a thousand things at the same time and stop having so many simultaneous projects that will be impossible to accomplish in a short period is a gain, even if it could be thought of as a loss. And this is where the relationship between success and focus (the one thing) begins.

The relationship between focus and success

I’ve always liked technology, and although I haven’t become an expert in the field, I’ve been following the amazing news that keeps popping up.

One company that’s hard not to admire is the search giant google. If we think about history, we will see that one of the secrets was having a very well defined focus from the beginning. If the motto was to catalog all human knowledge, the steps that were taken had only one direction: to be a website where the user could find the desired result in a few clicks.

The minimalism of the home screen, maintained until today, presents the company’s central objective: to be a research or search company.

Thus, while other companies – which also offered search results – had pages overcrowded with other content such as news, Google had one focus, one single thing: offering the user the best results for online searches.

Over time, the search giant’s way of monetizing redefined the company as an advertising company (even more than a search company), but in any case, the central objective was not lost. Of course, with growth, other products were being developed such as gmail, google chrome, android, google glass and even automatic cars that do not require a driver.

But what I want to point out with this example is that success depends on focusing attention on one thing. If, by chance, the company had focused on a thousand products from the beginning, it would have lost focus and would probably not be as important a company as it is (see yahoo).

Likewise, individually and in small and medium-sized companies, lack of focus is one of the main problems. It is true that we can find stores with undefined and cheap trinkets that are successful – like the famous 1.99 stores – however, despite not seeming like it, there is a focus there that would be selling all kinds of things for a very low price.

Individually, the importance of having a defined, clear, measurable focus is certainly critical to success. And we must remember that success, again, is not overnight. It is sequential, over time, not instantaneous.

For example, let’s imagine a girl who dreams of being an excellent psychologist to help children. There is a clear objective, an objective that can be measured and that is totally possible to achieve. It’s just a matter of time and dedication and… focus.

Focus: finish high school. Focus: pass the entrance exam or get an excellent grade on the Enem. Focus: pass the subjects with excellence. Focus: paste degree. Start working in the area, look for a specialization, and so on.

Now, if a girl of the same age wanted to be a psychologist, but also an artist, singer and lawyer, it would be difficult for her to focus and it would be difficult for her to succeed (well) in all these careers. This is because the attention would one hour to one area and another time to another totally different area. I would close one college, start another. Trying to go north, south, east and west at the same time only causes paralysis.

The situation changes a little if we think that realization in different areas is possible if it is also sequential and not simultaneous. First, graduate in one area, then graduate in another, and then dedicate yourself to another (as a hobby or profession).

Conclusion

Anyway, I can’t help but recommend the book again. This One – The One Thing: Focus Can Bring Extraordinary Results in Your Life

One single thing. One thing at a time. Towards a clear, defined, measurable objective at a reasonable pace (slowly perhaps, but always) is certainly one of the simplest formulas for success, in any and all areas.
