Bathing every day, relaxing in hammocks, enjoying foods based on cassava and corn. As you probably already know, we Brazilians inherited a series of customs from the Indians. Not to mention the names of streets, neighborhoods, rivers and objects originating from indigenous languages.
O Incredible.club selected some that are part of our daily lives whose consumption or use we inherit from these extraordinary cultures. Check out.
Manioc
One of the foods most consumed by Brazilians and in more than 100 countries was discovered precisely by the Indians. The UN declared that cassava is the food of the century. With it, you can make hundreds of different dishes, sweet or savory.
Popcorn
Well known in movie theaters and in June parties, the word popcorn is derived from two Tupi words: ‘pi’ means skin, and ‘poka’ burst, that is, ‘popping on the skin’.
The habit of bathing every day
When they arrived here, the Portuguese did not understand why the Indians bathed in the rivers every day. Soon the Europeans also joined, starting with the washing of the feet, and, little by little, of the whole body. Brazil is one of the few countries where people take more than one shower a day.
terms and words
Cities, neighborhoods, objects and several other words from the indigenous vocabulary were incorporated into Portuguese. One of them is Butantã, pictured above, a neighborhood in the west of the city of São Paulo.
Hammock
The comfortable hammocks we know today were made of vines by the Indians. The discoverers of Brazil realized that the object had several functions — used as a means of transport and even in wakes — and began to adopt other types of materials for its manufacture.
And you, do you know any other habits adopted by Brazilians that originated in indigenous customs? Tell us.
