WHAT IS BEET CHIOGGIA?

Unlike the common beet, Chioggia is named after the Italian city near Venice where it was originally grown. What stands out, as with the traditional beet, is the pink and fuchsia skin, but the inside is what makes the difference: it is a vibrant color with white stripes. The flavor also varies, Chioggia is sweeter than the common variant and, therefore, goes very well with fruits, soups and salads.

This, of course, not to mention its nutritional value: it has proteins, vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium, iron, zinc and manganese, in addition to being very rich in iron and vitamin C, which enhances its antioxidant action.

This is why this beet is widely used to combat some diseases, especially anemia. To find out how this happens, we spoke to nutritionist Vanessa de Sá, from Raízs, an online supermarket specializing in the sale of organic products.

ANEMIA

“Chioggia beetroot fights anemia, as it is rich in iron and, in addition, it also contains a high level of vitamin C”, he explains. “This type of vitamin enhances the absorption of iron and makes anemic people retain the maximum of this nutrient, that is, a perfect food for those who suffer from this disease.”

EXCESSIVE FLUID LOSS

“For excessive fluid loss, this ‘different tone’ beet is also very effective, since it has potassium, which is essential for the correct functioning of the organism”, he explains.

“This type of beet also fights problems in the spleen and liver, as it helps detoxify the second organ, eliminating toxins and excess hormones”, he continues.

CONSTIPATION

“It is rich in fiber and is very suitable for people suffering from constipation. In addition, the food also acts on the circulatory system, helping to fight heart disease, ”she says. “All of this makes for favorable effects on bowel movement, which can help prevent constipation and lower cholesterol levels.”
