Another story says that in 1477, the Archduke of Austria, Maximilian I asked them to make a simple ring with the purest diamond they could find, set at the top.

Maximilian presented it to his fiancée Maria, Duchess of Burgundy, as a way of making his marriage proposal official and placed it on the ring finger of his left hand, which, according to an ancient belief, is where the vein of love is located.
