Details of the Harry Potter saga that many fans are unaware of

The Harry Potter story will turn 21 this year in 2018. Can you believe it? But despite the saga having ended a long time ago, both Harry Potter fans and the author of the books, JK Rowling, can’t stop telling curious details about the magical universe. Did you know, for example, that Valdemort’s name shouldn’t be pronounced the way we’re used to?

O Incredible.club found some interesting facts about the world of Harry Potter that most fans of the series are unaware of.

1. Magicians didn’t receive the Hogwarts letter on their birthday

When a future wizard or witch turns 11, he receives the precious letter of invitation to study at Hogwarts College of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This fact is known to all Harry Potter fans. Many may think that the boys received their letters exactly on their birthday: this happened to Harry Potter, that he was born on July 31 and received the precious letter from Hagrid’s hands.

But what would have happened if your birthday had fallen in late August or early September? Turns out he was already a mage, but still couldn’t study? Enrollment letters are sent out at the end of July to all prospective students, and the birthday has nothing to do with it: it just so happens that, in the case of Harry Potter, the dates coincided.

By the way, the first letter arrived on July 25th: if you remember, the Dursleys tried to hide it for a while. It can be assumed that the global distribution takes place at precisely that moment, and the letter is sure to find its owner.

2. There is no silver color in Ravenclaw symbols

Do you remember the house colors of Ravenclaw? Yes, yes, the one where he studied Harry’s first love, Cho Chang. The colors were blue and silver, but that would be the answer only of those who haven’t read the book; in fact, JK Rowling had given the house the blue and bronze colors๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท Apparently, the creators of the films discovered that gold (the color present in the Gryffindor house symbols) and bronze are very similar, so they decided to replace it with silver.

Another interesting point about Ravenclaw: its name translates as “claw of the crow”; however, the symbol of the house is not a crow, but an eagle: in the books it can be found in the envelope of Hogwarts letters, and in the scene when the characters enter the Ravenclaw drawing room. It’s a small but interesting detail!

3. Severus Snape had friends

In the movies, together with Harry, we enter the memory of the Potions teacher, Severus Snape. The film shows his warm friendship with Harry’s mother, Lily Evans. At the same time, the story emphasizes that young Snape lived absolutely alone and had no other friend.

This is not entirely true. His companions actually mocked him and even mistreated him; Nonetheless, he had a circle of friends. They were Lucius Malfoy, Avery and Mulciber, and a few other classmates.๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท But later on, their paths parted: Slytherins became Death Eaters and Snape became a double agent.

4. Death Eaters cannot fly

Do you remember the movie scene Harry Potter and the Mystery of the Prince when did the Death Eaters attack the bridge and destroy it? But even though these mages are really very powerful, they cannot fly. The scene, however, turned out to be spectacular.

But in the wizarding world, yes, there are wizards who can fly: Lord Voldemort and Severus Snape.

5. Harry Potter’s Dad Wasn’t Seeker

Harry Potter became one of the most talented Quidditch players, and this talent was clearly inherited by him from his father. In his day, James Potter also practiced the sport and, as shown in the first film, father and son occupied the same position: both were Seekers. Remember when Hermione took Harry to the Awards Hall? James’ name and his position on the team were engraved there; and, as has been said, he was a Seeker. Also, in Snape’s memoirs, both in the book and in the movie, in one of the scenes, James plays with a Golden Snitch. It seems that there should be no doubt on the matter.

However, as JK Rowling herself confirmed in one of her interviews, James Potter played Quidditch in another position, being top scorer. So the creators of the first movie fantasized a bit about turning James into a Seeker and ended up confusing millions of fans of the story!

6. Harry lived under the stairs for a reason

For some traits of her heroes, Rowling drew inspiration from herself or her friends and acquaintances. The writer attributed the fact that Harry lived under the stairs to the fact that he was unprotected, even living Dursley; the character was literally locked away, out of sight of others. Rowling recalled that, as a child, one of her biggest fears was being unprotected and being trapped.

It was mainly because of this fear that the writer founded her own charity organization that helps orphans and operates in more than 30 countries.

7. Hogwarts is far from being the only college for magic and sorcery

In the book and in the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Firewe learn that, in addition to Hogwarts, there are at least two other schools of magic: the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in France and the Durmstrang Institute, which is located somewhere in Northern Europe.

In fact, there are many other schools of this type, as reported by Rowling herself. Some mentions found by fans in the books lead to a total of 11 schools!

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (England) Beauxbatons Academy of Magic (France) Durmstrang Institute (Sweden or Norway) Koldovstoretz School (Russia) Escuela de Magia Mahoutokoro (Japan) Escuela de Magia Uagadou (Uganda) Castelobruxo (Brazil) Faculty of Ilvermorny Magic and Sorcery (USA)

Why are there fewer schools than countries?

Apparently, the reason lies in the reserved condition of magicians and sorceresses: many prefer to teach children at home and not expose them to unnecessary danger.

8. Harry didn’t choose Gryffindor

Surely everyone remembers well how, at the Sorting Ceremony, Harry started talking to the Sorting Hat. The hat insistently advised him to go to Slytherin house, but Harry refused and whispered, “No Slytherin, no Slytherin!” And the hat sent him to Gryffindor, something quite predictable, given that Harry’s parents studied at the same house, and his friends had just been sent there.

But on the other hand, we don’t know which house Harry really wanted to go to. He didn’t choose Gryffindor house, and he might not even care where he went to study, as long as he wasn’t sent to Slytherin.

It is also certain that Hermione could have ended up in another house as well: she once admitted that the hat had offered her to go to Ravenclaw, but changed her mind and sent her to Gryffindor.

Another detail: the Sorting Hat is rarely wrong, but when he does, he never admits his mistake.๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท So it was with Harry, when he said he would be better off going to Slytherin. And Snape turned out to be an altruistic person, which is absolutely not typical of a Slytherin student, and Peter Pettigrew was a coward who had nothing to do with Gryffindor.

9. We always mispronounce Voldemort’s name

Translated from French, the name of the Dark Lord means something more or less like the “flight of death” – vol de mort. And, in French, the letter “T”, when written at the end of words, is not pronounced, that is, the correct thing would be to say “Valdemor” and not “Valdemort”๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท As, in fact, French fans of the saga have done all this time. And also Rowling herself, who once confirmed this information and the correct pronunciation of the name of the main villain of the saga on his Twitter.

10. Before being admitted to Hogwarts, children from magical families also study

All children in England who possess magical abilities begin studying at Hogwarts at the age of 11. But who teaches them to read and write before that?

Rowling answered this question in one of her interviews. In general, children from magician families study at home. It was like that, for example, with the Weasley family: their mother taught them. They can also go to primary school, as Muggle children do, and as Harry Potter did. But it’s not very safe, because their magical abilities can manifest at any time, especially when they experience intense emotions.

Of course, some fans of the saga tried to calculate the costs of studying at Hogwarts, but the writer quickly put an end to the question: second Rowling, Studying at Hogwarts is free, as all education expenses are borne by the Ministry of Magic.

11. Rowling regrets Ron and Hermione getting together

JK Rowling reveals curious details of her work quite often. For example, she planned from the start for Ron and Hermione to be together, but then lost the guarantee that the two could get along๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท The author said the couple probably needed to go to family therapy to resolve all their conflicts.

Furthermore, the writer suggested that perhaps Harry and Hermione had a more harmonious relationship than Hermione and Ron. But who can know now?

12. Sirius Black, Lily and James Potter never worked

Harry’s parents James and Lily were married immediately after graduation. Then they joined the Order of the Phoenix, Harry was born, and then the Potters tragically died at the hands of the Dark Lord. James had some savings (this has been confirmed by Rowling) left by his family, and he and Lily survived on that money.

Sirius also didn’t have time to start a profession: after the death of his friends, he ended up in Azkaban, and then spent several years in hiding.

Most likely, they all planned to pursue a job in the future, but they just didn’t have the time to do so, or it wasn’t at their destination.

So neither James nor Lily nor Sirius worked.
