Designer Clothing Store Salespeople Told About What Really Happens Behind the Scenes

Most people who frequent designer clothing stores or ateliers are associated with the elite and luxury. A job, therefore, as a salesperson at one of these stores can sound quite tempting. However, working behind the counter in a designer store is not always as appealing as it sounds.

1. Customer wealth is not determined by the clothes he or she is wearing

Clothes do not have to be branded. But if the person is wearing an expensive watch, it means they can afford to spend a good amount of money in the store and will certainly get more attention from the salespeople. If a customer walks in with an umbrella, it will give the impression that they don’t have a car, as there is often a closed parking lot in the mall where such stores are normally located. That is, this person will hardly be able to buy a piece in a brand store.

Most of the time, someone’s financial condition is determined by their behavior. They can be rich people, for example, who don’t have problems with money and shop with practicality: they arrived, tried, bought.

2. Salespeople wear clothes from the store but don’t buy them

If a saleswoman can’t spend all of her salary buying a dress from Dolce & Gabbana, she can simply pick up a dress from the store and, after work, return it. If this happens, people rarely wash clothes after wearing them. Mainly because fabrics are normally very delicate and washing them would risk spoiling the material. It is quite easy to notice when someone has worn and soiled it, as often, after wearing clothes for a day, many people leave traces of cosmetic and makeup products. Customers can easily notice this.

3. There are always secret security guards at designer stores that even salespeople may not know about.

There was a case where a man exchanged an expensive original wallet for a fake copy, and left the store with the original in his pocket. Yes, rich people often steal. They may have 100 such wallets at home, but they still have the urge to steal. To prevent this kind of situation from happening, there are usually security guards disguised as regular customers. They act like customers to make sure that both buyers and sellers don’t steal items from the store.

4. High price doesn’t always match quality

The price of some shoes may be the same, but the quality can vary greatly. Sellers will tell customers that everything was made in Italy, but in fact, Italian production may only be present in a select group of pieces, but everything else may have been sewn in Ukraine, Brazil or China. Even so, the original and the copy can be on the same shelf and have the same price.

5. Not all shoppers are real customers

Go to a store with someone you trust, don’t listen to salespeople or “random customers”. Often, the owner of an atelier or store can enter the place as if he were just a customer and say that he is interested in buying the piece that you are in doubt whether to take it or not. Sellers may even say that a particular pair of pants is the last piece, and thus “real” customers feel pressured to take that item.

Likewise, salespeople from neighboring stores can also behave like fake customers for the same purpose. They often play the role of random shoppers who are also interested in the exact garment a customer is trying on. In certain cases, people are hired to perform this role.

6. Discounts are not real

This is the main difference between branded stores and regular stores: studio sellers can set any price. Even the store owner may not know exactly how much that clothing is selling for in his store. After making the sale for a certain high price, sellers simply take the difference for themselves. This is very easy to do as employees of certain stores can buy items from the store itself at cost price. At the checkout, however, they run the item at its regular price, not to mention the “discount”.

7. There is a VIP area for famous customers

When the stars enter the VIP room, all the models the person was interested in will already be on display for them to try on. As a general rule, celebrities already let them know in advance what they would like to try on, and sellers meet them with ready-made pieces. In these VIP lounges, customers can order whatever they want: a drink, a snack, in addition to being offered a personal assistant.

Employees aim to sell clothes smartly. Typically, people who frequent these types of stores already have a lot of clothes and items at home, so they often make emotional purchases. Emotions, therefore, must be positive for them to enjoy being there and, possibly, purchasing an item. Salespeople, then, must know how to capture the needs of that specific customer so that he or she wants to come back to the store later.

10. Customers often frequent designer stores as a meeting point

Usually, in the halls of branded stores there is a coffee machine, expensive alcoholic drinks, light snacks and chocolate. Vendors can offer champagne, which is also part of the private assistance given to customers. As insisting that the customer buy a specific piece is prohibited, visitors can stay in the store until the end of the day, talking, drinking and eating. Even if they leave there empty-handed.
