Who was the Late Correa?

Born in 1815, María Deolinda Antonia Correa, was a beautiful young Argentine woman, possessed of a kind spirit that differentiated her from other girls of the time. She was devoted to the Virgin Mary and many townspeople believed that she performed miracles of healing to the sick that she cared for and for whom she prayed.

His parents were José Amador Correa, hero of the war of independence, and Rosario del Tránsito Ramajo. Deolinda was married to Baudilio Bustos, a prosperous horse breeder. They were a very happy couple, recently blessed with a beautiful baby whom they named Mariano, in honor of the mother of God.

Historic context

The year was 1841 in Argentina, a country convulsed by the civil war, where Federals and Unitarians faced each other. Soon the Bustos-Correas would see their placid and happy family life shattered. In the Battle of Angaco, on August 16, the bloodiest confrontation of the entire campaign took place between the Federals commanded by José Félix Aldao and the Unitarians commanded by Mariano Acha. After 6 hours of bloody fighting, the Unitarians are victorious.

This battle marked the beginning of the Deolinda tragedy. Shortly after the Battle of Angaco, the federals retook the city of San Juan, assassinating Mariano Acha. They went to the Bustos family farm, stole the horses and forcibly recruited Baudilio Bustos for the Montoneras and took him to La Rioja.

Being very young, as was customary in the 19th century, the Correa sisters had married the Bustos brothers, nephews of the federal governor Don José María Echegaray. Two perfect couples who could not imagine the terror and suffering that the future held for them, due to the political situation the country was going through.

Deolinda’s sister’s husband was apprehended and murdered in June 1830. Deolinda’s anguish was immense when the men of General Lamadrid, a Unitarian leader, took Baudilio Bustos as a prisoner of war. It was then that she decided to go after the Montonera, with her son in her arms, to look for her husband, eager to meet him in San Juan and ask for mercy so that he could be released.

Making Firm Decisions

Deolinda was extremely worried. In times of war, a single woman with a newborn baby had no opportunity to run the farm. This, added to the harassment of which she was a victim by the town sheriff, pushed her to make the firm decision to go in search of her husband. That’s how she prepared for her departure.

She packed some food, the strictly necessary luggage, took her baby and left for La Rioja following the footprints left in the sand by the soldiers’ shoes. She hoped to be reunited with her husband and resume her life away from the battlefields. She carried with her bread, salted meat, jerky, patay, figs and two bottles of water.

The supplies were not enough for the journey through the desert, in the summer season where the sun and heat were inclement. On the way, he consumed the food and his supplies of prickly pears with which he deceived his thirst also ran out. when it is believed that he chewed bitter roots and ate dirt.

He walked a lot, between dunes and rocks; an inhospitable desert that was lost to sight on the horizon. Deolinda was already without strength. The heat, hunger and thirst had exhausted all his resistance. He reached the top of a small hill and could not take another step. She sat under a carob tree, placed her baby between her chest and covered herself with a blanket. She tried to resist, but her death won. It was October 18, 1841.

The child feeds on the breast of his dead mother

According to legend, Deolinda raised a prayer to God and the Virgin Mary, of whom she was so devoted, to protect her son. And she was listened to as she always was when she asked for the healing of the sick in the town where she lived.

Two days after his death, some muleteers were passing through the area and heard the baby’s cry, but they could not locate where it was coming from until they noticed birds of prey flying over the hill. They galloped up their horses and found the child suckling from the dead mother’s breasts.

The muleteers picked up the child, they saw that a medal with the inscription “José Amador Correa, Hero of Chacabuco” hung on the mother’s neck. This honor had been conferred on Deolinda’s father when the war of independence ended and he had given the medal to his daughter who always wore it with great pride.

The Riojans Jesús Orihuela, Rosauro Ávila and Tomás Romero buried Deolinda on the slope of the Pié de Palo mountain range, near the Vallecito Cemetery where the sanctuary is currently located. They placed a carob cross on the tomb with the inscription “Difunta Correa” and raised a Prayer for the beautiful mother who died in such torturous conditions of hunger, fatigue and thirst.

When the news of Deolinda’s death and the miracle of the baby feeding at her breasts two days after her death became known, it surprised the inhabitants of the entire area where this woman was already known and much loved for her kindness and virtue. Many countrymen began to make pilgrimages to the tomb, thus initiating one of the most important popular religious cults in Argentina.
