A Colombian company has innovated by creating dishes that, instead of being discarded, can be planted. That’s right: planted. With that, thanks to this different and unique idea (the germinable utensils), helping the environment became much easier.
O awesome.club does not recommend that you bury common disposable plates among your plants, but in this specific case, we know that the Earth will thank you.
When Claudia Barona and Andrés Benavides decided to found a company, they had a clear idea in mind from the beginning: to follow the philosophy from “cradle to cradle”. This ecological principle proposes the creation of products whose decomposition is favorable to nature. And with that, they created an initiative that changed the eco-friendly product industry.
With the idea in mind, the partners founded Lifepack, a company that takes advantage of corn husk waste and pineapple crowns from the Colombian industry, transforming them into utensils such as plates, biodegradable and germinable cups and bags. “We use agricultural residues that are reused and transformed into a dish that will always end up in the earth, so that vegetables, flowers and fruits grow from it”, explains Claudia. These dishes, in addition to being biodegradable, have a seed inside.
they were inspired in the usual way of disposing of plastic waste: they are piled up and buried. Germinable utensils suffer the same fate, but unlike plastic (which can take 1,000 years to decompose), it only takes 20 days to decompose, starting a new cycle of life with the plant that will germinate.
The company grew and achieved the goal of creating products that generate life. More than new plants, Lifepack’s ideas also generate jobs. Around 190 women have already been trained to be part of the company. Most of the time, they are heads of families or elderly people, with the desire to reinvent themselves and work to receive a monthly income.
This large team is currently looking for new opportunities, such as, for example, the development of disposable objects for personal care and industrial packaging. The company is also expanding its activities with the installation of a factory in Missouri, in the United States. The goal is to enter the North American market.
Do you think this idea will be beneficial to the environment? Would you use these plates instead of traditional disposable ones? What other initiatives do you know like that of Colombian entrepreneurs to save our Planet? Tell our team in the comments section!
