Can men and women be “just friends”? Scientists answer

Scientists have been asking questions about this topic for a long time and are looking for some kind of chemical that reacts in the bodies of men and women. And while girls might cling to the notion or concept of “just friendship” between the opposite sexes, guys might think otherwise.

The research was conducted at the University of Wisconsin by psychology professor April Bleske-Rechek. Her study yielded very interesting results.

The answers were based on a 10-point scale, and the results showed that men tend to be more attached to their “girlfriends”, while women don’t feel as close to their “friends”. And that doesn’t mean that they are distant, the point is that they are simply not attracted to their male counterparts, while these are the ones who sometimes can’t stay in the friend zone and start to develop feelings for the girls in their friend group.

There was another interesting observation in this research. Nearly 200 volunteers were asked to choose a person of the opposite sex with whom they had no emotional attachment and describe their relationship and chemistry. They had to choose between “we are friends” or “I feel a physical attraction for him”, or both options.

While 42% of men said they were attracted to their female friends, only 29% of women admitted to this fact. 17% of boys and 5% of girls chose both options.

It was concluded that a smaller number of women were attracted to their friends. Men, on the other hand, enthusiastically declared their feelings towards their female friends. Indeed, it is said that many of a woman’s gestures towards her male friendships are misunderstood by men.
