This model is almost always made of wool felt, however, some famous gangsters, such as Bugsy Siegel, wore straw hats. He sometimes wore the popular Panama Hat as part of his ensemble. Others can be seen wearing the Trilby hat, which is very similar to the fedora but with a narrower brim.

The color of the fedora generally depended on the outfit with which it was worn, but the black one is the most traditional. This usually happens to lower-level enforcers or mobsters. There is no single reason to point out why gangsters wore Fedoras. It’s a stylistic choice and really suits the image and status these mobsters wanted to portray. They began wearing them in the 1920s. By the 1940s, the look was solidified in mob culture, as Al Capone wore one to present an aura of status, style and dignity.
