Better Impossible

This film tells us the difficulties and, later, successes of a man with OCD. Here we analyze how it is presented and what you can learn from it.

Better Impossible is the title of a comedy starring a writer who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), called Melvin Udall. His short temper and irascible nature isolate him from the outside world, which he despises and by which he is at once overwhelmed.

All his plans, subject to the most immovable of routines, are altered by his neighbor, a young artist who needs his help after receiving a brutal beating. To his surprise, love and friendship will cross your path.

“I may be the only person on the face of the earth, who knows that you are the most fantastic woman on earth, I may be the only one who appreciates how amazing you are in each of the things you do, and in how you are with Spencer, Spence, and in every thought you have, and how you say what you want to say and how almost…”

How to approach a disorder through comedy and hope?

Better Impossible is a romantic comedy film that deals with the problem of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in a different and fun way. There is no doubt that the profile of the protagonist, played by Jack Nicholson, is a mine of gags that only fulfill the mission of a comedy: to make the audience laugh.

But, not everything is comedy in the life of the writer and protagonist of the story. Your daily routine is significantly affected by the countless repetitive and impulsive behaviors that you are unable to control. Thus becoming his own prisoner and being forced to isolate himself from the rest of the people.

The protagonist of the film does not trust anyone and, For him, any human being is a nuisance. These types of people usually have a marked inflexible character, a deep rootedness in their customs such that, despite the help that can be given to them from the outside, they are reluctant to change or any interference in their world.

“Dr. Green, How can I be diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder? and then be surprised if I show up here suddenly?”

Despite this, the film conveys a message of hope for all those people who, like Melvin Udall, suffer from OCD. And hope lies in each of the brave people who dare to relate to them.

Of course, the person affected by this disorder must have willpower and be willing to work on their behaviors. We can all have dozens of hands at our disposal to pull us out of a hole. But if we are not willing to extend our arm, any show of help will be ineffective..

Suffering and love in Better Impossible

On this occasion Melvin Udall, our protagonist, opens up to the cast of characters that destiny puts him on the highway of life. He does it with doubts, suffering and distrust, but the circumstances and the nobility of his new friends act as a buffer against the new panorama that opens before his eyes.

“No instructions. What I do is observe. Have you ever watched someone without them knowing? An old man on the bus? Some children going to school? There are people waiting and you see a beam passing through them. And he knows it has nothing to do with anything external. They are more real and more alive. “Looking at someone for a long time you discover their humanity.”

On the other hand we have love. A feeling that can sometimes save us or crash us. And you can do it in equal parts. Without a doubt it can be an essential factor to extract us from our dome and greet us with all the goodness, and all the miseries, mind you, of relationships between humans.

With patience and support, awakening is possible. In the film, Udall, Melvin to his friends, looks back, and when he returns to the present, he suddenly finds himself a new man. He’s barely noticed it. In fact, he hardly needed any effort. The reason is this: the people, the facts, the context, etc., everything has served as a springboard for him to find out who the hell that guy is that he sees every morning in front of the mirror.

Therefore, do not despair. If you, or anyone you know, is too much like Melvin, calm down, take a deep breath and seek help so that that glass urn-prison breaks into a thousand pieces and finally lets out the person inside.
