A tiny possum has been miraculously rediscovered in Australia after devastating bushfires.

More than 17 million hectares of land were burned in Australia because of the bushfire, affecting 99% of biological reserves and their animals. The massive fire completely wiped out the pygmy possums’ habitat, and experts feared these tiny animals were gone for good. However, after constant recovery efforts, the small species of opossum has reappeared.

The wildfires, which terrorized Australia in 2019/2020, have hit the world’s smallest species of possums hard. 440,500 hectares of land, which were once home to these creatures, were destroyed by fire. Now, Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife, a volunteer biodiversity conservation program that works constantly to restore wildlife, has finally discovered a possum of this species.

The tiny pygmy possum weighs less than 10 grams and is difficult to study because of its size. It is estimated that more than 93% of the entire population of this species was extinguished by the fires on the island, so its condition is still extremely vulnerable. Other creatures that have been found are common brush-tailed possums and western pygmy possums, among more than 20 rare species.

The biggest threat to pygmy possums today and to other possums in general on the Australian island are feral cats. Ecologists believe that there may be more marsupials hiding in the forests and feeling insecure with the disappearance of local vegetation.

Before the fires, the official number of small pygmy possums found on Kangaroo Island, according to records, was only 113. According to experts, it is a real miracle that they managed to survive and they hope that other rare species, but not yet found, have the same luck.
