A doctor with lots of tattoos shows that her appearance doesn’t affect her professionalism

Sarah Gray is a medical doctor graduated from the University of Adelaide in Australia. She intends to specialize in orthopedic surgery and is considered one of the most tattooed women practicing medicine in the world. Sarah became popular for having broken with some prejudices within the medical community; in addition, she has become something of a spokesperson for people who want to show that a tattooed body does not affect the way people work.

O awesome.club did an exclusive interview with Sarah and wants you to know your opinion on the taboos she and many others still have to face.

Sarah said that the relationship with her colleagues has always been peaceful. From the beginning of her career she was accepted and her nickname is “colorful”. She was recently called to a meeting with her superiors and landed her first job in the OR. In that sense, she said, “They didn’t let my looks compromise my potential.”

Artistic ways gave Sarah more positive experiences than negative ones. However, despite this, she had to face one or another uncomfortable situation. An unpleasant example happened at a restaurant in Australia: she and her husband had to leave the restaurant at the request of the owner. This is a sign that prejudices still exist and that some people still cannot escape the standards set by society.

But not everything is lost. Thanks to her talent, Sarah was able to open her own tattoo parlor. She also won the contest Miss Ink Australia in 2017 and claims to receive support from many co-workers.

According to Sarah, “If you want something, work hard and you can get it. If more people fight to eliminate prejudice, the greater the chances that people’s way of thinking will change in the future”. And she is right: to be able to change the attitude of others, it is necessary to fight and work every day, and to show that there is nothing wrong with an aspect different from the norm.

Art has always been part of our world, in different ways. However, it is not always accepted in the best possible way, either because it is too subjective or because it is out of the ordinary. For artists like Sarah, creativity is a form of expression that must be made the most of, without judgment or refusal, as this is how the true essence of people can be demonstrated.

In the past, tattoos were seen as a sign of delinquency; moreover, a tattoo was a way of fixing a person in a certain social class. Despite the fact that society has evolved in many ways, and despite the fact that people’s minds are more open than before, according to a recent study, prejudices still exist and are not close to ending.
