A user of the social network Pikabu and his wife decided to carry out an experiment and empirically test whether it is possible to raise quails at home with eggs bought in a normal supermarket. The author described in detail in his publication how the idea of becoming a quail farmer came about and the difficulties he had to face.
The team of awesome.club must admit that it was difficult to resist the temptation to carry out the same experiment at home. Read on for the experience and get ready for the bonus at the end about an unconventional way to make new friends.
How the idea of raising quails was born
The couple bought an incubator as a gift for their parents and, before handing over the equipment, decided to test how it worked. As they didn’t have much time, they chose what they thought was the quickest method: quail eggs. For quails to lay eggs, they need to be close to males, unlike hens. A quick internet search confirmed that it is possible to raise quails with purchased eggs, even without an incubator and only with a normal heater, which was done by a young student and a friend in Russia.
The couple bought 80 eggs that weren’t in the fridge at a regular supermarket, but chose the freshest🇧🇷 At home, they checked them all more closely and, with the help of a flashlight, identified 18 eggs with cracks. As quail eggs have spots, they were unable to determine whether or not they were fertilized.
They placed 62 eggs in the incubator and waited for the result
The temperature in the incubator should be 37.8 °C and the humidity from the first to the tenth day should be 80%. From then on, it should decrease to 40%, but the temperature should remain the same. On the 15th day, the humidity should increase to 75% and the temperature should go to 37.2 °C. The couple was confident that 3 to 5 eggs would hatch successfully. After 17 days of anxious waiting, they had a surprise that exceeded all their expectations.
First chick to hatch
From the first hours, the chicks were already actively moving around inside the incubator. The couple dried them and placed them in an unheated box.
One day quail after hatching
A 3-day-old baby weighs between 8 and 9 grams.
The couple had a big surprise and ended up with 19 “babies”
From the 4th day, the puppies already had more energy, they jumped, ran around the box and even tried to fly.
However, there were some difficulties: 5 quails had problems. They had their paws outstretched and could not get up; that is, they were just crawling. Breeders call these puppies ‘helicopters’. The couple tied their paws together with a rope and the next day they were able to stand on their own.
How they fed the animals
In the first 2 days, the animals received a chopped chicken egg; on the 3rd and 4th days, they were fed a mixture of eggs, ricotta and ground wheat. From the 5th day, the diet started to consist only of feed.
How did the experiment end?
The initial idea was to leave the 3 or 5 quails planned in a cage, as pets. As the result exceeded expectations, all the animals were donated to the parents’ farm in a nearby village.
Bonus: Erika Lim from Malaysia bought a duck egg at a restaurant and raised it like a friend
The initial idea was to prepare a balut (a dish based on half-hatched duck eggs). But Erika decided to save at least one duck from sad fate. Now, she has a new best friend, Paw Daisy. The bird lays 1 egg every 25 hours and Erika no longer has to buy eggs at the supermarket. A beauty of an economy.
Have you ever had the same curiosity and thought about trying to create a bird with a supermarket egg? And what could happen to an ostrich egg?
