We spoke with designer Flávia Barros, responsible for the Flor Morena brand and exhibitor at the O Mercado fair, who told us which earrings are best suited for each type of face.

The oval face is one where the height of the face is 1.5 times greater than the width. According to the designer, this face is very harmonious and goes well with any type of earring, without exceptions.

Square face

The square face features the forehead, cheekbones and jaw with the same width. If the intention is to disguise the width of the chin, the designer recommends: “medium earrings and above the chin to avoid volume in this region”. As for the formats: “in a circular shape or in a straight line without a pendant are the best options”, concludes Flávia.

Round face

The round face is the same width and the same height. For this type of face, Flávia recommends: “it looks more harmonious with long and thin earrings with pendants at the tip or geometric pendants to lengthen”, she comments. If the intention is to thin, “avoid the circular and bulky ones close to the ear”, concludes the designer.

This type of face has a wide forehead and a narrow jaw. To balance the face and give more volume to the lower part of the face, Flávia’s tip is: “the earrings can be in any shape, as long as the volume is concentrated close to the chin”.

Button

Button-size earrings are small and discreet, often worn on a daily basis. Nothing prevents them from being used on more formal occasions such as parties and it can even be the earring size chosen by the bride at her wedding. There is no restriction to use this type of earring and it looks harmonic on any type of face.

Earrings of this size give lightness and can compose both more discreet productions and serve to harmonize a production that already contains many elements. The options with stones and sparkles are the best options for more formal occasions.

mids

Earrings of this size bring together the discreet and the flashy. It all depends on the material of the earring. The ones with stones, more sparkles and with wide pendants go very well at parties and events, while the glass or resin earrings are more discreet for day-to-day.

Medium earrings are the ideal size for triangular faces, as earrings that are too large for this type of face can increase the jawline. A medium earring with volume in the lobe region fulfills the role of harmonizing the look on triangular faces.

long

This earring size allows the incorporation of several materials in the same earring: several stones, feathers, fringes (fabric or metallic), among others. The material always makes a difference to know which occasion is most appropriate. The brighter ones look better at night and add more sophistication, while the earrings in simpler and duller materials look good during the day and more informal situations.

On round faces, long and thin earrings are the best choice if the intention is to thin it. On square faces, very long lengths are not indicated as they can increase the jaw. In inverted triangle faces, long earrings with volume in the jaw are a great choice.

Maxi earrings

For being long and voluminous, this type of earring steals all the attention for him, being the main accessory: “the maxis do not match any type of necklace, the ideal is that the neck is completely free, so that they do not fight, so, abuse the bracelets”, comments Flávia.

Usually the pair of earrings of this type is composed of a button for one of the ears and the ear-cuff itself for the other, causing an asymmetrical aspect in the production. The rings can be used on any occasion and combined with a multitude of accessories. Consideration should be given to the size of the ring and whether it has any decorations. With the smaller and simpler ones, it is possible to invest in more accessories in the look, while the larger and ornate ones, as well as the maxi-earrings, are the main point of the accessories.

The fringes of the earrings can be metallic or fabric. The earring can only have fringes or can be composed of other elements, such as stones. “The fringes are ultra feminine and have a natural movement that gives a touch of sensuality during the day or night”, comments Flávia. This type of earring can be combined with other accessories, always remembering that the bigger the earring, the smaller the other accessories in the production should be.

Party earrings are sophisticated, of good quality and can feature stones and sparkles. To get the look right, Flávia advises: “the ideal is that it is harmonious with the clothes, from the choice of metal color to the stones used”. It is also important to balance the proportions of brightness in the look: “it is valid to balance the brightness of the clothes with that of the earring, choosing which one to carry more”, concludes Flávia.

Causes of earring allergy and how to solve the problem

Redness, swelling, itching (itching) and mild pain in the region where the earring was used are some symptoms of allergy caused by the accessory. The biggest cause of allergies after and when wearing earrings is the presence of nickel sulfate, but allergies can also occur due to the presence of other substances: “earrings can have dyes, rubber and other materials that can cause allergic contact dermatitis”, comments the Prof. Dr. Maurício Domingues Ferreira, coordinator of the course in allergy at IPEMED.

The only way to know if the earring has nickel or another component that causes allergies, is to ask the components of the product at the time of purchase. To be sure which component causes allergy, it is necessary to consult a specialist: “if the patient has a history of lesions in the ear that suggest allergic contact dermatitis, a patch test can be performed to identify which component is suspected to cause allergy”, recommends the allergist.

Many people are not allergic to nickel and can wear earrings and other accessories with the substance without any problem: “only individuals who are genetically predisposed and exposed to nickel sulfate in an earring become allergic”, comments the allergist. The only way to avoid allergy is to avoid earrings that contain nickel or another substance that causes an allergy in the individual. Persisting in the use of the earring with a substance that causes allergy can worsen the condition.

Can putting nail base on earrings prevent allergy?

Applying nail base to jewelry can be a way to preserve them and prevent them from peeling or darkening, but can it also prevent allergies?

Prof. Dr. Maurício Domingues Ferreira: Using nail base on earrings may not be efficient to avoid allergic contact dermatitis. Of course, by covering the earring with a nail base, in such a way that there is no skin contact with the nickel, contact dermatitis will not occur. But there will still be the possibility of the individual becoming allergic to the nail base itself, if he has a genetic predisposition to it.

Therefore, if the person already has symptoms of allergy when wearing earrings, the best solution is to consult a professional to be sure which substance is causing the allergy. It is also important to make sure at the time of purchase that the earring does not contain substances that cause allergies.

What types of stones can earrings have?
