12 successful rock bands made up of all women

The first rock bands that triumphed in the world were made up of men. But the girls did not stand still and little by little began to gain space. Now, all-female rock groups are starting to become commonplace in music.

1. The Runaways

When we talk about rock bands formed by women, we mean not only singing, but also playing. This is the case of The Runaways, considered in their beginnings as the wild teenagers of rock. They emerged in 1975 and were the first group formed exclusively by women. The formation with Joan, Lita, Cherie, Sandy and Jackie was the idea of ​​producer Kim Fowley. The group toured Japan (where they recorded their Live Japan album), but upon returning from that tour they got into a series of infighting that eventually led to their split in 1979. Its members started different solo projects, the most successful of which was Joan Jett (the one we see in the photo).

2. The Pandora

A band born in California that made a career between 1983 and 1990. They didn’t always keep the same lineup. The group was led by Paula Pierce (died 1991), who was also responsible for composing the songs. your first album I’m Here I’m Gone was released by Moxie Records. From then on, the band entered a period of internal disputes. This instability also led them to pass through different music labels. The band eventually disbanded, leaving 5 albums, but some former members rehabilitated it last year for a tribute.

3. Babes in Toyland

It was a musical trio from Minneapolis composed of Kat, Lori and Michelle (Courtney Love occasionally played bass), with a rocker sound close to grunge and powerful lyrics. Its members knew how to win over their followers. The band toured during the years 1989 to 1995 and during this period released 3 albums, with Fontanelle (1992) being the most successful of them, with more than 220,000 copies sold. 4. The Donna

This punk band started to transform in 1995, formed by Brett Anderson on vocals and keyboards, Allison Robertson on guitar, Maya Ford on bass and Torry Castellano on drums. The group managed to get signed to the rock label Atlantic Records. From the beginning, it was one of punk’s favorite bands and its growth was constant. His followers are called the donnaholics🇧🇷 Another fact that few people know is that their original drummer had to be replaced due to an illness, difficult to recover from, in the tendons of her hand. If you listen to the song Midnight Snack, you might recognize a similar sound to Macadam 3, 2, 1 by Argentine group Riff.

5. Kitty

Canadian female rock band. The starting lineup was Mercedes Lander (drums) Fallon Bowman (guitar), Morgan Lander (vocals) and Tanya Candler (bass). Owners of a heavy metal sound, over time they became glam rock. At first they played Nirvana and Silverchair songs, but then they started working on their own compositions. In 2007, they released Funeral for Yesterday, which earned them a double platinum album. In 2014, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of its formation,
a documentary about the history of the band called Kittie, Origins/Evolutions, directed by Rob McCallum was released.

6. The Ultrasonics

We are now rock in Spanish. From Mexico comes the sound of these women: Jenny Bombo and Tere Farfissa started the band in 1996 and, after testing several musicians, they decided on Suzy Vox, Jessy Bulbo and Ali Gua Gua. Their strong personality lyrics, added to the power of their live performances, led the band to record 3 albums. The punk and garage sound gave a different style, running away from the trivial. 7. Nervous

Now it’s Brazil’s turn, a power trio of women, pure metal. The group started on the road in 2010, formed by Fernanda Lira (vocals and bass), Prika Amaral (guitar) and Luana Dametto (drums). Their first album was released in 2012 with the title Time of Death, followed by Victim of Yourself (2014), Agony (2016) and their latest production Downfall of Mankind (2018). There have been some changes since the original lineup, but the group remains active and steadfast in its style. The band toured in Colombia, Spain and Mexico.

8. Widows and hijas of Roque Enrol

The audacity of this Argentinian women’s rock band comes from its name. The band was launched in 1983 showing modern and fun music, which accompanied their image on stage. Led by Mavy Díaz (daughter of harmonica player Hugo Díaz) in voice, the band was completed with Claudia Sinesi (bass and vocals), Claudia Ruffinatti (keyboards), María Gabriela Epumer (guitar) and, as a guest, Rolo Rossini (drums). Their first album was published in 1984 and the title was the name of the band. In 1985, they released Catrúnica City and a year later their last work to date, Vale Cuatro. One of his biggest hits was Bikini a lunares amarillo, a version of the song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.

9. Those Dancing Days

Sweden also has its female rock bands, in this case with an indie style. The name of one of these groups comes from a song by Led Zeppelin (Dancing Days). The beginnings of the band date back to 2005 and its initial lineup was Rebecka Rolfart, Cissi Efraimson, Smooth Pyk, Mimmi Evrell and Linnea Jönsson. They released two albums, the last being in 2011 and then the group was disbanded. Lisa, Cissi and Rebecka decided to form Vulkano, a band with similar but less commercial music.

10. Hijas of Zion

Reggae is one of the variants of the movement called rock, and as female representatives of this sector are the Hijas de Zion, an Argentine group formed by the sisters Danisa (bass and vocals), Carla (vocals) and Brenda (drums). Besides them, they are part of the group Flea (guitar and backing vocals), Giyo (percussion and backing vocals) and Belém (guitar and backing vocals). His first and only material released so far is called Destino. The beginning was in 2009 and since then they have played many shows with a tour of Mexico.

11. Kira and Las Malditas

Mexican rocker girl band, formed by Zianya Gon (drums), Diana (guitar and vocals), Rita Cianuro (keyboards) and Paulina (bass). All were part of different rock groups. Kira has a dark rock sound and is part of Mexico’s undeground bands. Their future projection seems to be good, based on their musical quality, which they define as “made with the guts”. They also have a way of defining the group, “four witches conjuring rock rites”.

12. L7

And to close, a mythical grunge band. Originally from Los Angeles, L7 started to become known in 1985 and, in 2016, they released their latest album, Fast and Frightening. Initially they appeared with a more punk sound, but soon they approached the grunge that dominated the music scene of those years. Its original members were Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner (both guitarists and vocalists), and both bass and drums were taken over by different members throughout their career. L7 has released ten albums to date.
