9 Ways to Control Your Bladder When There’s No Toilet Nearby

When our bladder is half full, we start to feel the need to go to the bathroom. And as you may know, this can put us in uncomfortable situations, those that occur when there is no place or time available. Fortunately, some tips can come in handy at times like these.

To produce this post, the team at awesome.club put together nine ways that might help make it to the nearest bathroom. And at the end, we even prepared a bonus explaining how you can train your bladder.

1. Release gases if necessary

The accumulation of gas in the intestines can put extra pressure on the bladder. Relieving this sensation by passing gas can make you feel more comfortable, allowing you to hold your urine longer.

2. Reposition your body: Sit up straight but relaxed

The posture your body adopts can make your life easier if you are “holding on”. Don’t squat; prefer to stand erect to relieve pressure on the bladder. This will possibly make it easier to manage the urge to urinate.

3. Keep your body warm

When we are cold, our body reacts to the drop in temperature. One of the consequences of this is the increased production of urine. So, if you really feel like going to the bathroom, put on warm clothes or turn on the heater.

4. lie down

5. Cross your legs when standing

The urethra is the channel through which urine passes from the body. And it is possible to compress the canal slightly when crossing the legs. But only resort to this strategy when standing, as in a sitting position, this would only result in even more pressure on your bladder.

6. Try not to laugh

When we have a good laugh, the muscles in the center of our body contract, causing greater pressure on the bladder. In addition, the sphincter muscle, which locks the urethra to prevent leakage, relaxes and this is where urine leaks out. That is, if you feel like urinating, don’t laugh!

7. Think of some distraction

When our bladder is already more or less full, the nerves in the region send the message to the brain that it is time to empty. But the need to urinate may be less urgent than it seems; so a distraction can divert the focus, at least for a while, from that urge to go to the bathroom. So next time, try to think of something else or browse your phone for a bit. Thus, you will see that the urgency will disappear.

8. Squeeze your glutes

Bladder control relies heavily on the pelvic muscles, which are those located around the urine channel. Contracting the butt a few times in a quick exercise to tighten the muscles can help retain urine inside the bladder, preventing leakage. You can do this in any position, standing or sitting.

9. Avoid entering the water

Bonus: Train to be able to hold your urine longer

Some people need to go to the bathroom more often than others. But this can be a result of ingrained bad habits, which fortunately can be reversed. Try the following step-by-step technique to train your bladder:

For a day or two, watch the number of times you go to the bathroom to urinate. Set a training period that is 15 minutes longer than what you normally wait between trips to the bathroom. When you start training, empty your bladder as soon as you wake up. If the urge hits later, use the techniques listed in this post to be able to wait until the next defined period. Start by increasing your break by 15 minutes a day. After a few weeks or a few months, you should feel less and less of an urge to run to the bathroom!

We remember that holding urine for a long time can be harmful to health. We do not recommend doing this unless absolutely necessary. Always look for a doctor if you want to make any changes in your habits.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you could have used one of the tips shown in this post? Do you know another useful technique to dribble the urge to urinate? Comment!
