The Germans are recognized as economic champions in Europe. Despite the high prices of utilities, housing and insurance, many German residents still manage to save. The desire to save money in this country has its roots in the past, and many are genuinely financial masters.

We, from awesome.clubwe decided to find out how people in Germany usually save money and, perhaps, learn a little from them.

Germans are usually very concerned about the environment. That’s why many prefer bicycles to cars. This option not only reduces fuel and parking costs, but also helps protect the environment. In addition, the country has a well-served public transport network. And there are lots of ways to save on tickets. For example, if you buy an annual card and sign up for a special subscription, you can save around 300 euros a year.

In Germany, the rationalization of water consumption is taken seriously. They even calculate how much each bath is worth: in the bathtub it costs about 3 euros, and in the shower 1.5 euros for about 10 minutes. Showering just once a day can cut costs by €180 a year. There are usually hydrometers installed next to the faucet in German bathrooms, to control the amount of water used.

A friend who has lived in Germany for a long time said that if there is no dishwasher in the house, then plates, glasses and cutlery are immersed in the kitchen sink filled with water and a little detergent. Gyms are very popular in Germany: around 10 million people join them. However, the cost of a plan seems to be quite high for many, ranging from 15 to 80 euros per month. That’s why many people choose to join sports clubs, whose monthly fee is usually around 6 euros. And if the price is still unaffordable, it’s always possible to go to the nearest park and join the people playing football or Frisbee.

Finding cheap groceries in Germany is not difficult. In any nearest store or supermarket, there will certainly be promotions and discounts on some products. It is customary in the country to be considerate about food. Some non-perishable items like pasta and rice can be purchased in a special offer to stock up. While others are bought exactly in the required amount.

In almost every city you can find special Fairteilers (food sharing). Food donated to charities is sold at low prices. For example, many supermarkets donate groceries because they are close to expiry.

One of the biggest expenses for residents of Germany is utility bills. The cost of electricity and gas can be quite high. However, in the first year of service, supplier companies usually grant discounts. Therefore, after the end of the contract, many end up acquiring services from other companies. The main thing is not to miss the moment, as the contract is automatically renewed. And to change the provider, you need to notify the current one six weeks before the end of the term (the exact dates are indicated in the contract).

In recent years, Germans prefer to share and exchange goods with their neighbors. There are special sites where you can put up any item for sale, give it as a gift or exchange it for something else. It’s also a great way to meet new people. In almost every district one can find shelves and cupboards on which people leave books and take those they like.

Some taxes in Germany can simply be waived. For example, that of the church, about 8%. Ordinary workers generally do not file tax returns. However, if you spend time on it, you may be able to get some of the funds back (tax refund). That’s why many keep receipts and any proof of expenses. Completing such statements can be tricky, but there are several paid courses that teach you how to do the calculations.

Germans are one of the most demanding buyers and they don’t like to spend a lot of money on clothes. In addition, they prefer practical and comfortable things over fashionable items. Also don’t usually throw away old or damaged parts if they can still be used. Furniture, accessories or wardrobe items can be purchased at flea markets or in special stores that sell them second-hand. In these places, by the way, they accept used items and resell them online or in stores, after minor repairs.

Finding a suitable property in Germany is not easy. The real estate market is limited and special offers are hard to come by. The rent is divided into two types: the “cold” and the “hot”. The first is calculated based on home size, neighborhood and furnishings, and the second includes utility costs. It’s worth checking if the landlord is overcharging. In that case, legal help can be obtained to force you to reduce the rent.
