Approximately 60% of people cannot go ten minutes without lying. That means a lot of untruths. Even so, there are some things we can do to know if someone is lying or not, like looking at the person’s smile, for example. If it feels forced, she could very well be lying to you.
we, from awesome.club, we’ve put together a few tricks to help you figure out who’s lying and who’s not. Check out!
1. Ask them to tell the story again, but in reverse
Usually, when people lie, they already have a made-up story ready and in a certain chronological order. If they have to tell it backwards, they’ll be tense, because that’s not what they rehearsed. This means that lying will become a much more difficult task. They will begin to omit some details, and as they become more nervous, inconsistencies in the narrative will emerge.
A true story is much easier to tell and, if told the other way around, the person may even remember details that they couldn’t remember the first time around.
2. Use the element of surprise
If you think there’s any chance the person is lying, ask a random question midway through the story. Ask something really specific if you can. In this way, the interlocutor will have to expand the lie so much that he himself will get into a trap.
3. Check if the story is vague
A liar may omit important details simply because they have no idea how to include them in the lie. Pay attention to how vague the story really is. It may be on purpose, to stop him from asking specific questions he doesn’t have answers to.
4. Watch out for fake smiles
When you are lying, there is a greater chance that the person will purse their lips. This will make your smile look sly. If you already know the caller, it may be easier to notice a fake smile. But here’s a tip: When people smile, they usually do it with their whole face, not just their lips.
5. Ask the same question in different ways
A liar will often only respond using the same details, but in a different way. When you ask a question in, say, three different ways, it will force the person to give you more information about the story you are telling. If you’re lying, you’ll get stuck, using the same words or phrases and even the same details.
6. Try to pay attention to any changes in the voice
Two things that also change when someone lies are the tone of voice and the speed of speech. If you notice that the other person is talking faster or even slower, chances are they are trying to keep up with the lies you are telling. This also goes for the tone of voice—high or low. All these features show uncertainty.
7. Pay attention if the other takes a long time to respond
If you ask a question that is relatively easy to answer, but the person is taking a while to get back to you, it probably means they are thinking about what to say or trying to keep up their own lies. Rushing is also not a good sign. This could mean that you have an answer on the tip of your tongue.
8. See if the story changes
If the person who is lying feels in charge of the conversation, they will appear very confident in your eyes. However, if you start catching her in her own lies, she will start to lose control and that trust will also disappear. Thus, it will begin to close in on itself more and more.
9. As a last resort, ask for an explanation of the lies
If you think nothing else is working, give the person the facts you already know and get satisfaction from the lies. If she continues to blatantly lie, for example, adding a lot of details that you find suspicious, you can try to challenge her. But be careful and use the facts correctly, otherwise it is you who could be called a liar.
These are just tips you can use to try to uncover the lies, but it’s not an exact science, so be careful when using them. Have you ever used any of these tricks to catch someone lying? It worked? Do you have any tips you can share?
