From time to time, a film appears that is successful among teenagers, showing the joys and dilemmas of this phase. Some of these films were adapted from the books, however, to the surprise of some avid readers, these versions had very significant changes. But are the stories on the small screen and big screen more or less interesting than in the books?
O awesome.club decided to compare some teen movies and will show you what changes have happened since they came out of the books. Will you remember some of them? Come check!
1. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy has been a huge hit lately. One character in particular makes the love triangle with Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky, John Ambrose. In the book, he is described as a blond boy with light eyes.
At the end of the first film he even gets to be characterized in this way, being played by Jordan Burtchett. However, the production chose to change actors in the second feature To All Boys: PS. I Still Love You, leaving the physical characteristics described in the book and first film aside, casting Jordan Fisher to live the character, which left many fans confused.
2. Confessions of an Outcast Girl
Anyone who has read Confessions of an Excluded, Unloved and (A Little) Dramatic Girl, by Thalita Rebouças, knows that Tetê is passionate about cooking. The protagonist even shares some of her recipes with readers and this is an important factor in building her personality. In the Netflix adaptation, however, this taste for cooking does not appear, even the character in the film does not like chocolate and makes a point of emphasizing it.
3. The Kissing Booth 2
In the book The Kissing Booth 2: Love at a Distance, by author Beth Reekles, two new characters are introduced to readers: Amanda and Levi. However, in the film adapted for Netflix, their names have changed: Amanda becomes Chloe and Levi becomes Marco.
4. Everything and All Things
A scene that caught the attention of fans in All and All Things is when the character Olly pastes pictures of the ocean on Maddy’s window, since the girl couldn’t go to sea, which leaves a sentimental touch. However, in the book this scene simply does not exist.
5. Harry Potter
Anyone who has watched some of the Harry Potter films has probably noticed that Hermione Granger is extremely intelligent and crucial to the other characters. However, in the books she is not described as being as calm (and collected) as she is in the movies, there are several moments where the character panics and simply doesn’t know what to do.
6. Paper Towns
Praising fraternal love, the adaptation of John Green’s work for the cinema is at times more interesting than the book. With that, there are some changes that made the difference in the story, for example, in the film there is no intense confrontation between the characters Margo Roth and Lacey Pemberton, leaving the plot between the two less dramatic.
7. The Sun Is Also a Star
As much as the main idea was kept in the movie The Sun Is Also a Star, some interesting details were very different from the original. One is the affectionate nickname Natasha bestowed on Daniel, while in the book she calls him “Mr. Red Tie”, in the adaptation it was “Mr. Chess Tie”.
8. The Princess Diaries
The Princess Diaries is a movie classic, inspired by the work of Meg Cabot. But anyone who has read the books knows that there were numerous changes for the film and one of them is simply Mia Thermopolis’s cat, Fat Louie. While many know him by his black and white fur, in the book he is orange.
9. The Fault in Our Stars
Success in theaters, The Fault in Our Stars is an adaptation of John Green’s best seller. And if you cried reading the book, chances are you did the same when you saw the movie. A curious fact that did not happen on the big screen: Gus’s ex-girlfriend, named Caroline Mathers. In the book, she is not only mentioned, as Hazel Grace is investigating the girl’s social networks and seeing pictures of her with Gus. In the film, however, she is simply not mentioned.
Have you watched any of the adaptations listed here? If so, which version is better: books or movies?
