8 Products We Buy in Bulk Unnecessarily

Some products that are in our daily diet are wrongly considered durable. Producers encourage consumers to buy large packages, ensuring that they get the most benefit. However, any food has an expiration date, which can shorten considerably if storage rules are not followed.

We simply cannot create the necessary conditions in our kitchens for many of these products. In the end, instead of saving, we spend twice as much on food that we’re sure to throw away later.

O awesome.club developed an inventory of ingredients that we often buy the most wrongly. We recommend that you immediately check your food reserves and do not continue to buy products from this list in large quantities.

1. Flour

Wheat flour, like any other flour, is considered to be a product with a long shelf life. However, it is very difficult to create the necessary conditions for their conservation at home. Due to temperature variations and high humidity in the kitchen, the expiration date of flour decreases from a few years to just a few months.

In addition, since the product absorbs all the moisture from the air, when stored incorrectly, it becomes a favorable environment for the habitat of various microorganisms. That’s why it’s not worth keeping more than 1 or 2 kg of flour at home.

In order not to lose the product, we recommend complying with the following rules:

the temperature of the room for its storage must not be higher than 20 ºC; air humidity should be up to 60%; the product must be in an airtight container.

2. Vegetable oils

Regardless of the type of oil and method of preparation, storage can be very long. In this way, sunflower oil retains its beneficial properties for 1.5 to 6 months and olive oil for 1 to 2 years.

This duration remains active as long as all the rules for its conservation are complied with, but the main thing happens when the product is opened. As soon as the first contact of the oil with oxygen occurs, the expiration date will be considerably reduced to less than 1 month.🇧🇷 Therefore, it is better to buy a small bottle at a time, and necessarily keep it in a dark and cool place.

3. Spices

Whole spices can be preserved for a few years. But many people prefer to buy them ground, whose expiration date is considerably shorter. Any of them must be kept at a temperature below 20 °C and the air humidity must not exceed 75%. But it is not always possible to meet these conditions in the kitchen.

Even if spices are kept in airtight containers, they can absorb moisture from the air at the time of use. On the other hand, whole ones quickly lose their flavor quality. The solution is to buy a little and only complete spices: dried leaves and herbs, berries, roots and seeds.🇧🇷 It is worth crushing the products directly at the time of preparing the dish.

4. Brown rice

The processed rice, that is to say the white, can be conserved from 10 to 18 months depending on the conditions of its conservation and the production methods of the producers. But brown rice is a special cereal. Its shelf life is very short, as the product is saturated with biologically active substances.

It should be noted that at room temperature unrefined rice should not be stored after opening and it is worth keeping in the refrigerator. It is best to buy this cereal in small containers🇧🇷 If you consume it immediately after brewing, you will get the maximum benefit.

5. Nuts

Each type of nut has its own expiration date. But all of them are preserved for a much shorter time than we believe. For example, walnuts in shell are suitable for consumption for up to 12 months. The peeled ones last between 2 and 4 weeks if stored at room temperature, and up to a year if kept frozen.

It is worth remembering that the longer you keep the walnuts stored, the more it is worth cleaning it and checking that there are no insects or worms.🇧🇷 It is much easier and more reliable to buy nuts in small quantities and not store them for more than a month.

6. Coffee

There are dozens of coffee varieties, and for each type, its expiration date and conservation rules are different. On average, a natural roasted product, whether ground or grain, should be stored for 6 months to 1.5 years. Naturally, for domestic consumption of this stimulating drink, it does not make sense to make large reservations.

Every coffee lover knows that it’s best to grind the beans before brewing, so it’s not worth buying ground products in large quantities right away. After opening the package, this coffee should be consumed within a week. Subsequently, the quality of its flavor and its benefits disappears. With the raw material, that is, the raw grain, everything is easier.

If you still decided to buy a large package, the coffee can be separated and a part stored in airtight containers, in small quantities, at room temperature. The rest can be left in vacuum bags in the freezer.

7. Potatoes

For a long storage of potatoes, it is also necessary to create optimal conditions:

temperature from 13 to 18 °C; a well-ventilated room; direct absence of sunlight.

In this way, the potatoes are preserved for 6 to 8 months. Many keep potatoes in a compartment, but the humidity level is difficult to regulate.

Under normal conditions in an apartment, the tuber is preserved for up to 3 months: as a rule, at this time green spots appear, sprouts, and the skin becomes rough, or the potato itself becomes soft. Which means you can no longer eat it because it has become unhealthy.

8. Honey

This healing product can be stored for up to 2 years as long as it is kept in an airtight container. From the moment of opening, the expiration date is reduced by half. However, as a result of the effects of high temperatures, humidity and sunlight, it quickly loses its beneficial properties. Also, violating storage standards, natural honey can be fermented. It is safer to buy in small portions.
