Dubai, the largest city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates (the country is a kind of confederation and brings together other emirates, such as Abu Dhabi and Sarjah), is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. In the 60’s, it was a desolate place with a few buildings in the center. Today, it is a large urban center. There are so many local surprises that in the desert region where it is located it is even possible to find a ski resort.
We’ve put together some impressive data about this emirate that will blow your mind.
1. Dubai police drive luxury cars
The fleet of cars includes luxury brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes. The cars are not just a testament to the region’s economic level; they are necessary because that is the only way the police can intercept other luxury cars, common in the region.
2. About 77% of the population is made up of immigrants
Only 23% of Dubai’s population is native; the majority of employees working on construction and new buildings come from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Decision-making positions in banks and hotels, for example, are generally held by Europeans and Americans. Another important fact is the difference in economic power between immigrants and the rich natives.
3. Dubai residents do not pay taxes
The United Arab Emirates is a tax-free region; therefore, many people can afford the luxury of living comfortably. Furthermore, business is not subject to them either. It may seem strange, but what exists in the city are paid licenses and permits.
Company registrations must be renewed annually and the amount varies from 5 to 6 thousand dollars.
4. From desert to global urban center in a few decades
According to the City Momentum Index, prepared by JLL experts in 2014, Dubai is one of the 3 largest dynamically developing cities in the world. An example is the 42 subway stations built in less than 3 years. Another is that 20% of the world’s cranes are in the region.
The city is also building the world’s largest amusement park, called Dubailand, which will have artificial islands and huge tourist centers.
5. Inside the Burj El Arab hotel there is enough gold to cover 46,265 Mona Lisa paintings
The Burj El Arab is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. The interior is decorated with approximately 1,790 square meters of gold leaf. That’s enough to cover 46,265 Mona Lisa frames. In total, 8,000 square meters of 22-karat gold were used for the decoration.
6. Camel racing with robot jockeys
In place of traditional races, in Dubai camel races are organized with the participation of robots. The devices replace the ‘riders’, and they are lighter and have more flexibility, which positively influences the speed of the animals and makes the public more excited. The value of robots ranges from 300 to 10 thousand dollars.
7. The authorities are building a municipality twice the size of Monaco with its own climate control system
The project to build a municipality in the region with hotels, parks, theaters and shopping malls is being evaluated. The area is approximately 4.5 square kilometers, double, for example, the principality of Monaco in Europe. The creators hope that the site will be visited by 200,000 tourists a day. The place will be entirely pedestrian and the climate will be comfortably controlled by computers.
8. Despite the hot weather, Dubai has a ski resort
In the biggest mall in the city there is a ski resort. Its area is 22,500 square meters, 60 meters high and has 5 slopes with different slopes and difficulties. The site also has several toboggan runs, climbing walls, ice caves and a cinema.
