7 Incredible Stories of People Who Got Lost in the Woods and Survived

Every year, many people get lost in nature all over the world. While some of these people never manage to return and end up dying (in the desert or in the mountains, for example), others rely on luck and their own resistance to survive such a frightening experience.

In this post, the awesome.club tells the story of seven tireless people who, despite having everything conspiring against them, were able to save themselves.

Jamie Neale’s 12 Day Challenges

Then 19 years old, the young man from London got lost in the dense bush of the Blue Mountains National Park, in Australia, while on an excursion in July 2009. The hike, unfortunately, turned into a nightmare that lasted 12 days. He survived by eating seeds and plants, as well as using tree trunks to cover his body. Although rescue service helicopters tried to locate the boy, the trees prevented the victim from being seen.

Neale was eventually found by two other tourists, who took him to a hospital.

Juliane Koepcke survived a 10,000-foot fall and 9 days in the woods

On December 24, 1971, the 17-year-old German was traveling on a commercial plane with her mother when lightning struck the aircraft during an intense storm. The plane broke up in mid-flight. Juliane fell from a height of approximately 3,000 meters in the middle of the Amazon jungle and, even trapped in the plane’s seat, survived with a broken collarbone and injuries to her right arm and right eye, which was very swollen. She managed to locate a small stream and followed its course, despite the water reaching above her knee. The young woman had learned from her father that strategy often allowed one to arrive at some point of civilization.

After being lost in the woods alone for nine days, she found a small boat tied up next to a shelter. Juliane used gasoline from the boat’s fuel tank to clean her infected wounds. Later that day, workers using the same shelter found the girl and gave her first aid. She was put on a plane the next day.

Andrew Gaskell’s spiritual quest turned into a two-week nightmare in the woods

When he was 25, the Australian vacationing in Malaysia got lost during a visit to Gunung Mulu National Park. He had decided to stay away from tourist attractions crowded with visitors so that he could truly connect with nature. Gaskell was reported missing on October 20, 2016. After being found, he said he got lost after descending a mountain with many bushes and several different trails.

The young man was found by a rescue team and rescued after almost two weeks in a remote area known as the Hidden Valley. Taken back to civilization, the boy was malnourished, dehydrated and his legs were covered in leeches.

Yossi Ghinsberg was found after three weeks with rotting skin

What started out as the adventure of a lifetime for Ghinsberg in 1981 after he completed his military service in Israel soon became a nightmare struggle to survive. He got separated from a group during the trip to the Amazon rainforest, having no food or proper equipment. Man survived by eating berries, fruits and eggs taken from birds’ nests. Later, Ghinsberg said that he was almost eaten alive by animals and stung by large red ants, as his skin began to putrefy. The Israeli was found three weeks after he was reported missing, shortly before the search ended.

Aleksandr Kovalev survived the harsh Siberian winter and the bears for 2 weeks

Kovalev, who worked as a gold prospector and drove trucks, disappeared in the Siberian taiga during the bitter winter of 2017. The rescue team sent to try to find him located his vehicle, but there was no sign of the man. To add to the mystery, Kovalev’s glasses were in the truck, when everyone knew he could see very poorly without them.

However, two weeks after the disappearance, the man appeared on the side of a highway, where he was rescued. He had frostbitten legs and had to be hospitalized. The trauma was so great that Kovalev could not remember how or why he got lost, nor how he managed to survive in such low temperatures, in a forest full of animals such as bears, wolves and tigers.

Shannon Leah Fraser managed to stay alive for 17 days in the wild

On September 21, 2014, a 30-year-old Australian woman decided to go hiking in an attempt to calm down after a fight with her fiancé. However, she got lost and couldn’t find her way back. After a long time, search operations were started.

Shannon finally found her way home after 17 days, enlisting the help of a farmer named Brad Finch, who helped her get to a hospital. Sunburnt, the woman’s skin was bleeding, not to mention that she had a deep cut on her leg. Shannon is reported to have survived by eating insects and fish, and drinking water from a stream.

Madeline Connelly’s Day Trip Gone Wrong

On May 4, 2017, the 23-year-old planned to go on a short, one-day hike through the woods in northwest Montana, USA. She started the trail without food or water, accompanied only by her dog, Mogi. However, after a few hours, the girl realized that she was lost, and ended up going further into the woods in search of a way out. To make matters worse, in addition to the low temperatures at night, Madeline knew that she would possibly face bears and big cats that inhabit the region. She was rescued after six days of intense searches.
