7 Home remedies against skin fungus that really work

Dermatophytosis, also known as ringworm or chilblains, are skin infections caused by fungi. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — CDC), in the United States, more than 700,000 people go to the doctor annually for related problems. Thousands of people seek treatment all the time, and there are some solutions to these problems that few people know about.

We have made a list of some home remedies that you can use to treat these infections. It’s important to know that although these remedies have been around for a long time, it’s always important to talk to a doctor before trying any home treatments.

1. Turmeric, or turmeric

Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Experts believe that curcumin, present in turmeric, has properties that act against microbes.

How to use:

Use turmeric in tea or food preparation. Also use directly on the infection so that the treatment is more efficient. Mix it with water or coconut oil and apply the paste on the affected area. Leave plenty of time before rinsing.

Warning: Turmeric can turn your skin yellow, but don’t worry, this effect wears off after a few days.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

The antifungal properties of apple cider vinegar can help treat itching. Vinegar regulates fungus growth by neutralizing the pH.

How to use:

Apply apple cider vinegar to the affected area with a cotton ball. Repeat the procedure up to 3 times a day. Rinse after 15 minutes of application.

3. Neem leaf extract

How to use:

Boil the neem leaves in water for a few minutes. Wash the affected area using water. Do not let it boil for a long time, or use the leaves directly on the infection, so as not to irritate the skin.

4. Coconut oil

Coconut oil contains a lot of fatty acids that help to cure the infection because they act on the cell membrane of the fungus. Coconut oil can only be an effective solution in cases of mild to moderate infections.

How to use:

Apply coconut oil to the area 3 times a day. Use it for a few weeks, even after the infection is gone.

5. Oregano Oil

Oregano oil, especially Origanum vulgare, contains thymol and carvacrol, good for stopping fungus growth.

How to use:

Always use diluted olive oil. Apply up to 3 times a day.

6. Garlic

How to use:

Do not apply the garlic paste directly to the fungus as it will irritate the skin. Mix the garlic paste with olive or coconut oil. Apply a thin layer to the affected area using a cotton ball. Leave the paste for two hours before rinsing. Repeat the procedure twice a day until you notice an improvement.

7. Tea tree oil

For over a century, native Australians have believed in the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of tea tree oil. Nowadays it is a product widely used in the fight against fungal infections because it reduces inflammation and detoxifies the area.

Precautions:

Always keep your skin clean and dry.

Wear shoes that allow air circulation.

Avoid community showers and, if you can’t avoid it, always use flip-flops.

Change your socks and underwear every day.

Do not wear tight clothing on hot days.

Do not share towels, socks, underwear or sheets.

Always wash your hands after touching an animal.

Take a shower after exercising.

Keep your fingernails and toenails short and clean.

What to do if you are already infected

Keep your skin as clean and dry as possible. Use a soft towel for the affected area and do not use it on other parts of the body. Don’t wear tight jeans. Loose clothing and quality fabrics reduce friction with the skin. If you must wear tight clothing, place cotton wool between your thighs or under your armpits to reduce friction and irritation. In general, the sores itch, but avoid scratching so as not to make the situation worse. Do not use perfume to avoid irritating the skin further. Wear clean clothes and clean the affected area two or three times a day.

When to see a doctor

Even in the worst cases, chilblains usually disappear after two weeks or 20 days. But of course if the wound is ugly or if it takes a while to heal, go to the doctor immediately.
