7 Actors Who Were Considered Too “Ugly” or “Beautiful” for a Role

The most attractive people tend to be more successful in life, psychologists say. But in certain cases, beauty can stop being an advantage and become an obstacle. While several actors on our list failed to land a role because they weren’t considered attractive enough by the producers, others were seen as too good-looking for the job. And to be honest, we don’t know which of the two situations is worse.

we, from awesome.club, we found that some actors lost roles because they were considered too ugly or too beautiful, and we’ll tell you more about it below. Read on to find out what happened to each of them!

1. Keira Knightley

Famous British actress Keira Knightley played a leading role in the film adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel Pride and Prejudice. And while Knightley seems like the perfect artist to play Elizabeth Bennett, director Joe Wright didn’t want to hire her because he thought the actress was too pretty. “But then he met me and said, ‘Oh no, you’re ok!’” joked Knightley.

2. Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield, who played the iconic role of Peter Parker in one of the Spider-Man stories adaptations, recently won a Golden Globe. However, Garfield was not always so lucky. In 2008, he auditioned to play Prince Caspian in the second film in the well-known The Chronicles of Narnia franchise. The director was torn between hiring Garfield or Ben Barns, who ended up taking the job.

“I remember being desperate. I auditioned for Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narcia, and I thought, ‘It’s got to work, it’s got to work,’” Andrew said. When he didn’t get the part, he asked the agent what the reason was. “She gave in to my incessant complaints and said, ‘It was because they didn’t think you were handsome enough, Andrew,'” the actor said.

3. Emmy Rossum

After ten years and eleven seasons, it’s hard to imagine Shameless with a different cast. However, actress Emmy Rossum, who gave life to the character Fiona, the eldest daughter of the Gallagher family, was almost left out for being very beautiful. “They didn’t want to see me; they didn’t even want to let me audition,” Rossum said. “They thought my image was too glamorous, that I couldn’t not look good.”

Emmy was not let down. She produced a video acting as Fiona and showed it to the producers. After three more auditions, she won the role.

4. Jennifer Lawrence

Before the iconic role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawerence became well known and won an Oscar nomination for starring in the feature Winter of the Soul. However, Lawrence’s spectacular career could never have worked out, as the actress was seen as too beautiful. “They turned me down, then went on to cast the actors in New York,” Jennifer revealed. “I took a late-night flight just to show up for casting the next day in New York.”

“Yes, that always helps. Red eyes. Not having taken a shower. No makeup. They ended up saying, ‘Oh yeah, she’s right. She’s not that cute!’” he said.

5. Hugh Grant

Although Hugh Grant’s appearance helped the actor to play heartthrob roles in several films, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary, there was an occasion when he almost lost a job for the same reason. In 1994, Grant was looking to be cast in a feature called Four Weddings and a Funeral. Yes, he ended up with the role of Charles, but Richard Curtis, writer of the script, didn’t want to see Grant incarnate the character. “After the audition, Richard Curtis did everything he could to stop me from getting the part,” Grant said.

6. Jamie Dornan

In the TV series The Fall, Jaime Dornan played a completely different role from Christian Grey, his most famous work. However, her co-star Gillian Anderson said that Dornan was almost left out of the show. “The initial idea was not to hire someone who was as attractive as he was,” Anderson later said. Dornan got the job, “but it had nothing to do with his good looks, although in the process we realized the psychological impact of that on the viewer,” she added.

“There was definitely something intriguing about it.”

7. Minnie Driver

British actress Minnie Driver spoke about the rudest comment she has heard throughout her career. It was a line that almost got her out of the role of Skylar, Matt Damon’s love interest in the much-remembered Good Will Hunting movie. “The producer of Good Will Hunting didn’t think I was pretty enough to be in the movie, and he didn’t want me in it,” she said.

Fortunately, not only did she get the job, she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the film.
