6 things you didn’t know about panettone that will make you drool

It is still one of the most traditional foods linked to Christmas, even though it hits the shelves earlier and earlier — you must have been shocked when you saw Panettone in the markets at the beginning of October. But have you ever wondered about the origin of that kind of fluffy bun filled with candied fruit (or chocolate, dulce de leche or anything that Brazilian creativity can imagine). We’ll tell you.

If you like it with a lot of raisins or without, if you like chocolate or fruit filling, whatever. Next, the awesome.club shows the story of one of the most traditional delicacies of the Christmas season.

1. He is Italian and was born over a thousand years ago

Although there is more than one version regarding the origin of panettone, one thing is certain: he speaks Italian. Despite its enormous tradition in Brazil, its birth took place in Milan, a city located in the richest region of Italy, in the north of the country, around the year 900.

2. The controversial origin

One of the most accepted theories about the invention of panettone is that it was created by chance. Exhausted by work, on the eve of Christmas, a baker’s helper named Toni put the raisin that was for the sweet pie in a batch of bread. Desperate, he tried to recover from his foolishness by mixing more candied fruit, eggs and butter. It was so successful in terms of sales that the chef decided to name the recipe after his assistant: pane di Toni (Toni’s bread), in Italian.

3. Christmas tradition

Whether or not the story about “Toni’s bread” is true, it is a fact that because it was created close to Christmas, the panettone started to be marketed always at the same time of the year (okay, we know that in Brazil there are already almost three months before Christmas). It even started to be bought in Italy as a gift. And who never gave a panettone as a Christmas souvenir, right?

4. Arrival in Brazil

Bauducco, one of the most famous panettone makers in Brazil, started selling the product in the late 1950s, in 1948. The recipe probably arrived in the country with the wave of immigration that took place after the Second World War in the flight from the country that was destroyed.

5. That typical green and yellow touch

Brazil cannot see food that already wants to create something different. So, it’s clear that panettone wouldn’t stick to the same silly recipe for more than half a century, would it? In addition to the also traditional chocotone, today there is a brigadeiro flavor, cream with stuffed biscuits, dulce de leche, bicho de pé and anything you can imagine. Even salty.

6. Dough and… Dough

In Italy, unlike Brazil, there is a minimalist version of panettone. Pandoro is just dough, without any kind of filling. Its origin is in the city of Verona, which is also in the north of the country, about 160 kilometers away from Milan, where panettone was born.
