Fats on the Ketonic Diet

The ketogenic diet proposes to consume as few carbohydrates as possible and replace them mainly with fats. These healthy fats have to be taken in their most natural state.

With a diet very low in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and high in fat, the liver transforms the fatty acids into ketone bodies to provide a source of energy for cells. One of these ketone bodies is hydroxybutyric acid.

This acid has anti-inflammatory properties. It also acts as a protector of the cell membrane and genetic material against alterations that can make them cancerous.

Many people on a ketogenic diet report feeling more calm and concentrated. It may be due to the effect of hydroxybutyric acid on the sympathetic nervous system, which combats anxiety and excitement.

A very similar compound, butyric acidis produced by the intestinal microbiota when fermenting fiber and is essential for the good condition of the intestinal wall, which can thus filter nutrients and prevent the passage of toxic compounds.
