I love relationships. I think they are the foundation of a meaningful life. But sometimes we forget how it all started. Maybe with a question? Would you like to go out with me?

Questions are powerful. They are the catalyst for life’s journey. They cause change, action, fear, emotion and possibility.

A first date is more than a union of two people. It’s probably the beginning of a completely different life. So the questions we ask during this special time become even more important.

1. Who was the biggest influence in your life?

Is it a parent, a friend, an author or even a religious figure? The answer will help you understand how the other person defines “influence”, but more importantly, it will give you clues about the type of person you are likely to be in the future.

2. Who is your best friend? What do you like about him/her?

Don’t be ashamed to go deep here. The word “best” implies one. Who is the person he/she likes the most?

Does this person make you happy? Does she motivate you to pursue your dreams? Whatever it is, this answer will give you a direct path to your person’s heart.

Remember, long-term relationships aren’t built on looks, but on friendship. So, finally, you’re figuring out what it will take a day to become your best friend.

3. What is your biggest goal in life?

Figuring out what the other person’s biggest goal is will give you a vision of the future if you decide to move forward with them.

Is he/she focused on his/her career or work? Will he ever want to get married? Amazing compatibility can happen when two people share similar goals.

4. What should I know about you that it would never occur to me to ask?

You don’t know what you don’t know. This question could do two things: The other person could tell you something amazing about their life that could take months to discover. Or, he/she could say exactly what you needed to hear to know that a second date would be a waste of time.

5. What is your greatest life vocation?

This question is directed to the future. What’s your passion? Where do you spend most of your time? What’s more important to you? These answers will give you more clarity to help you define the potential depth of your future relationship.
