Photographing birds is an art that few professionals master. It takes patience and perseverance. Sometimes photographers spend days looking for just one species, having to climb to the top of the tallest trees — and they still have to rely on luck to capture a great image at just the right moment. At other times, however, it seems that nature conspires in favor of these professionals and presents us with exciting clicks.

The author of some of the images you saw above is Luiz Novaes, a photographer with extensive experience in reporting in the São Paulo press. Upon retiring, Novaes decided to photograph only what he likes: flowers, fruits, birds and planes.

He doesn’t need to go into the wild for great images. He takes most of the photos in São Paulo, in his backyard or in parks, where he finds birds that we can’t even imagine live in the big city, like the macaw we see above.

If you want to venture out, he gives some tips:

It is necessary to invest in a quality camera, with a zoom of at least 400 millimeters. This allows you to photograph birds from afar without disturbing them. And with good image definition. Okay, you can start with your cell phone, to see if you have a knack for this art before buying a powerful (and expensive!) camera. Study your smartphone’s manual to see if it’s possible to take quality photos at a very fast speed, capable of freezing the image (or your birds will be colored blurs in the photo). If you have faith in your talent, the advice is to look for a photography course to improve your technique. The Social Service of Commerce (Sesc) offers basic and good courses. The National Trade Service (Senac) has courses from basic to university and postgraduate levels. Patience is the gift for anyone who wants to photograph birds and animals. “I wake up early, I don’t eat all the papaya or bananas for breakfast and take the rest to the backyard. The birds soon appear and from afar I set the camera. Sometimes it takes hours to get that good photo. But it’s a joy when she comes”, says Novaes.
