That’s why we decided to pull some interesting facts about this television classic from the bottom of the trunk. Follow!

Title

Early drafts of the original script featured the name nowhere (“Nowhere”), which was approved, but later replaced by the title we know, lost🇧🇷

actors and characters

According to the original script, the main male character of the series, Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox), should have died in the pilot episode. In addition, at first they wanted to invite Michael Keaton to play this role, but later both ideas were abandoned.
Especially for Yunjin Kim, previously considered to play the role of Kate, they created the character Sun, Jin’s wife (Daniel Dae Kim); for Jorge Garcia, who initially wanted the role of Sawyer, they created Hugo “Hurley”. Josh Holloway (James “Sawyer”) brought a certain eccentricity to the character by chance: the producers liked the way the actor kicked a chair when he forgot his lines once, and encouraged him to keep that characteristic.
In general, the personalities and destinies of many characters were conceived during the design process. casting🇧🇷 Kate, for example, was initially thought to be a middle-aged business woman, whose husband is said to have died in a plane crash. However, when Evangeline Lilly was confirmed for the role, those characteristics were given to the character Rose Nadler (L. Scott Caldwell).
Although Evangeline Lilly deserved to win the main female role of the series, the actress still went through some obstacles after her approval. She had to go through no less than 20 attempts until she finally got the American work visa (Evangeline was born in Canada) and, therefore, started recording a day late.

filming

All episodes were filmed in Hawaii, mainly on one of the islands — Oahu. For some actors it was not convenient to record and live on the island all the time and, for this reason, Emilie de Ravin (Claire Littleton) flew 1 or 2 times a week to her home in California, where she lived with her husband and a poodle.

In order not to be separated from the family, Matthew Fox rented a house close to the film set and took all his close relatives there. Jorge Garcia, on the other hand, was unable to attend his sister’s wedding due to the tight recording schedule.

As the events unfolded in the plot were much slower in relation to the filming process, some problems arose: the children, for example, needed to be the same age, but they had already grown up. Therefore, in order for little Aaron to be in the same age group, this character was played by more than 50 babies.
Many wondered why Jorge Garcia’s character — “Hurley” — didn’t lose weight under the meager conditions on a desert island. In fact, the actor lost a lot of weight after the first episode, but the producers asked him to keep the weight off for two reasons. First, because time on the island passed more slowly; and second, because he would need to record scenes from the character’s past, that is, before the plane crash.
Dominic Monaghan’s character, drug addict and rock musician Charlie, was inspired by Sméagol (O Lord of the Rings) and the little monster’s passion for the ring and power.

Creators’ subliminal messages

The series’ enigmas go far beyond the mysteries of the island. In the names of some characters are hidden references to writers, scientists and thinkers of the past. Ben Linus, Former Leader of the Others, comes from chemist Linus Pauling; the surname of Frenchwoman Danielle Rousseau, by Jean-Jacques Rousseau; Daniel Faraday, by physicist Michael Faraday. The names of heroes John Locke and Mikhail Bakunin are direct allusions to famous philosophers of the same name.

Interestingly, the plot slips with regard to the original ideas of such celebrities. An example: John Locke proposes that Claire calm the baby, who she was crying, using the method of making a “little cigar” or wrapping the baby in a cloth. The British philosopher, however, was against this artifice and even wrote about it in a scientific document.

Another reference is the anagrams in names. At the end of season 3, Jack appears at funerals, organized by the company “Hoffs / Drawlar”, whose name is an anagram of the word combination flash forward (“Advance in time”), which makes it clear that a certain scene did not refer to the character’s past, but to his future.

In the 4th episode of the 5th season, it is possible to see on the coffin of John Locke the logo “Canton-Reiner”. Here is hidden the word reincarnation (“reincarnation”), indicating that it would still be too early to say goodbye to the character.

black and white

Aside from the fact that the title of the series in the opening is written in white letters on a black background (and at the end of season 5, in black letters on a white background), this combination and contrast of the two colors constantly permeate the lives of the characters. .

In the second part of the pilot episode, John Locke explains to Walt Lloyd how to play backgammon, saying that there are two players and two sides — one white and the other black.

In the 6th episode of the 1st season, Jack finds a leather bag with black and white stones, but their meaning is revealed only in the 6th season: The Man in Black and Jacob had played with these stones.

One of the main and most mysterious characters in the series is undoubtedly The Man in Black, who has supernatural powers and appears in the form of other people or black smoke.

speaking of numbers

Boone Carlyle’s (Ian Somerhalder) T-shirt says “84” in Chinese. If it is read upside down, we will have the figure 48, which represents the number of survivors of the plane crash: this is the theme addressed in the 1st season.
The sum of the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 has one more meaning. 108 minutes was also the exact duration of Yuri Gagarin’s flight into space. Whether this is just a coincidence or a strategic decision remains to be seen, as the creators chose not to clarify.
lost was recognized as the best-rated series of the decade itself (from 2002 to 2012), thus ahead of doctor Casa, Lar🇧🇷 How I met your mother🇧🇷 Gossip Girl: A Sassy Girl and dexter🇧🇷

It was also one of the most expensive series of all time. To give you an idea, 45 million dollars (about 243 million reais) were spent on the first season alone; and in the first episode, 14 million dollars (about 75 million reais).
