20 Things You Shouldn’t Have at Home Anymore

Accumulating clutter and unnecessary objects in our home can make us stressed and anxious. Too many trinkets on the shelves, postcards, mugs, old clothes and even cosmetic tubes can fill our mind with too many stimuli. This forces our visual, tactile and other senses to work constantly, never letting us rest.

O awesome.club wants to make sure our readers’ homes are as cozy as possible. That’s why we created this checklist. that you can use to organize your home. We hope it will help you transform it into a true fortress of comfort!

1. Old cables

As technology advances, we tend to accumulate more devices, and with them, more cables. The problem is, as time goes by, we don’t get rid of cables because we expect them to be useful in some way. Usually, that moment never comes and those old cords just keep piling up in your drawers. It’s best to organize them, keeping only what you need and recycling the rest.

2. Last year’s sunscreen

Essential during the summer, sunscreens are sometimes forgotten during the other seasons. It is important to make sure that the cream has not expired, otherwise it will no longer have an effect. Typically, sunscreens can last up to three years. If you can’t find the expiration date on the package, you can write the purchase date on it yourself.

3. Old magazines, expired coupons and instruction manuals

All these unnecessary paper products just take up space and clutter up our house, making it dusty. Unless it’s an important receipt you might need for a tax refund, or an exclusive issue of a magazine, it’s best to recycle the rest. Also, make sure those old instruction manuals are of use to you: most of them are now available online and even have video tutorials.

4. Socks without a pair

5. Stationery and office supplies

Pens, markers, rulers, post-its, adhesive tapes, calculators: sometimes we receive them as gifts or freebies with our purchases, and when we get back home, we throw them in some drawer, hoping that we will be able to use them some day. If you have such things, and you realize that you have not used them for more than a year, it is better to donate them to a charitable organization.

6. Old bras and other underwear

If your bras or panties have become too small for you, or have lost their shape and elasticity, avoid accumulating them in baskets and drawers. The same goes for uncomfortable models, even if they are beautiful. They don’t provide adequate support, which is important to prevent premature breast sagging, reduce deep wrinkles in the cervix, or avoid health problems.

If your lingerie is still good but uncomfortable, instead of throwing it away, you can donate it to breast cancer survivors or women in underserved communities.

7. Seasonings that have been out of date for a long time

Spices even have an expiration date, which is around 2-3 years. So cleaning out your spice drawer is a total must! You can take this opportunity to organize your spices in beautiful jars, writing the names and date of purchase on each one. As for old items, you can reuse them by adding them to your homemade soap or making sachets that will spread a pleasant aroma around the house.

8. Too many mugs

Mugs are a very popular gift, so over time we realize we have too many of them. In fact, so many that we don’t even use most of them. This type of “collection” can take up a lot of space — which could be used for something more necessary, so it’s best to give these mugs to children or simply donate them.

9. Unused notebooks, agendas, notepads and planners

10. Too many candles and souvenirs

Properly placed candles and decorations can give your space a special look, making it even more cozy or elegant. Too much variety or too many random trinkets will just mess it up. If some of them have sentimental value to you, you can organize a shelf or sideboard for them, keeping them all in one place.

11. Condiments forgotten in the fridge

A jar of mustard that’s too spicy or a ketchup you didn’t like sometimes sits on the shelf by the fridge door, waiting for a better time. After a while, it tends to be forgotten or simply ignored, although it still takes up a lot of space there. Before it passes the expiry date, you can give this sauce to your friends or relatives if they find it tasty.

12. Worn out or hurt shoes

Uncomfortable or misshapen shoes can torture your feet instead of comforting them. They don’t give you the support you need and can cause your foot to move around a lot, which can cause irritation, blisters or even bleeding. Uncomfortable shoes that are still in good condition can be sold, while very old ones can be recycled.

13. Chipped plates

No matter how beautiful or precious a plate is, it’s best not to eat from it if it’s chipped or cracked. When washing it, water can get into the cracks and lead to bacteria growth. Also, the crack will only get bigger over time. You can make some creative decorations using these parts.

14. Toiletries brought back from vacation

15. Plastic bags

We often bring these items home from the supermarket, and over time we create a huge pile of them. You must gather all the bags and recycle them, creating more space in your home. In addition, to contribute to the environment, it is also possible to replace them with reusable bags, such as fabric ones.

16. Bushings

Using a loofah can be risky, especially if it’s old. Dead skin cells can build up on it and it can also retain moisture, making it a perfect place for bacteria to grow. If you want to exfoliate your skin, you can use different body scrubs and silicone loofah as alternatives.

17. Old Board Games You Don’t Play Anymore

Board games are fun when you want to have a good time with your family or friends. But once you realize you don’t need them anymore, there’s no point in keeping them. Those that may have special meaning to you can be saved for fond memories, but the rest can be donated to children.

18. Old cards

Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, graduation, or any other special occasion could mean you get a chance to get cards from other people. Some of them can be really cute, but in reality, not many of us read them very often. You can easily recycle them instead of storing them.

19. Tapes and DVDs

Old tapes and DVDs can contain many memories of our childhood or youth. As technology advances, players for these media become less popular. To preserve your memories, you can digitize your old video moments and store them on a pen drive. This way, you will always have access to them and it will be easier for you to preserve this information.

20. Formal Wear You’ve Only Worn Once

Sometimes we buy formal clothes for special occasions, which end up not being worn anymore. They hang in the closet, taking up space and gathering dust. It would be better to sell them to get some money, or donate them to those in need.

How often do you get rid of old, unused things in your home?
