20+ Curiosities behind highly successful soap operas and details that you might not have known

Big hit soap operas like Family relationships🇧🇷 The clone and Chocolate with pepper marked the memory of Brazilians. Even if you’re a fan of these plots, it’s possible that you don’t know most of the curiosities that are behind Rede Globo’s productions. For example: did you know that Thiago Lacerda was arrested in the United States while recording the telenovela América? No? For love — 1997

The synopsis of For love was written by Manoel Carlos 14 years before the telenovela was aired. The writer would have been involved with other projects and ended up postponing the plot. To write the novel, Maneco, as he is called, was inspired by the only love he believes to be unquestionable: maternal love.
The author is recognized for creating protagonists called Helenas. In For love, Regina Duarte played Helena for the second time. The actress still played a third Helena 9 years later, in the telenovela Life pages🇧🇷
Several characters in this novel were inspired by common people and personal dramas, among them, Orestes. The role played by actor Paulo José was born out of a conversation between Manoel Carlos and a friend of the author, where the two concluded that every family has an alcoholic, an ex-alcoholic or a potential alcoholic.

Terra Nostra — 1999

For those who don’t remember, Terra Nostra explored the importance of immigration in the formation of Brazilian society. In childhood, the author of the novel, Benedito Ruy Barbosa, used to play with the children of Italian immigrants who worked on the coffee plantations of an uncle’s farm. It was these memories that inspired him to portray the Italian colony in the plot.
The role of Giuliana’s daughter, played by Ana Paula Arósio, was played by Maiara. It is said that the little girl became so attached to the actress backstage that she started to call her mother.
The soap opera was sold to several countries, such as Kazakhstan, Argentina, Ukraine, Romania, United States and others. However, it was the absolute audience leader in Portugal and was shown twice a day.

Porto dos Milagres — 2001

Actress Cássia Kis became pregnant with her third child during the soap opera and her costume was changed to hide the pregnancy.
Do you remember the last few chapters of Porto dos Milagres were marked by an election campaign? The direction of the telenovela teamed up with the Propaganda Division of Central da Globo to insert a fictitious election time during the broadcaster’s programming. The clone — 2001

Until 2001, The clone was TV Globo’s highest-rated telenovela at 8 pm. The previous record was from the telenovela The Untamedfrom 1997.
Actors Murilo Benício and Giovanna Antonelli started dating during the recording of the soap opera. The success of the plot was so great abroad that the Hispanic version of the magazine People gave them the title of the most famous couple in the world in 2002.
Débora Falabella, who played the character Mel, had meningitis during the recordings. But the curious thing is that her sister, Cynthia Falabella, acted as her stunt double in a remarkable scene of the plot. In an interview with High hoursshe said she had to dye her hair to record.

Director Jorge Fernando is known for making special appearances in soap operas. In Chocolate with pepperhe played a circus clown.
Actor Osmar Prado said that he was inspired by his own father, who was from the interior of São Paulo, to do the country accent of the character Margarido.
Chocolate with pepper was noted for being a very funny novel. Actress Laura Cardoso, who played Vó Carmem, said that the recordings were interrupted several times, as the cast could not contain their laughter.

The color of sin — 2004

America — 2005

America told the story of a Brazilian woman who crosses the Mexican border and arrives illegally in the United States. To better develop the plot, director Jayme Monjardim and author Gloria Perez spoke with several illegal immigrants to find out about the dangers of the trip.

The protagonist, Sol, was played by Deborah Secco. In the character’s preparation phase, the actress worked in the United States as babysitter, waitress and employee of McDonald’s. She stayed one day at each function.

The scenes set in the desert and on the Rio Grande, which serves as the border between Mexico and the United States, were painful for the production team and the cast, including Deborah Secco, Thiago Lacerda and Fernanda Paes Leme. On the days of recording, they had to face temperatures of −4ºC.

Path of the Indies — 2009

In 2009, the telenovela Path of the Indiesby Glória Perez, won the International Emmy for best telenovela, with the title “India — A Love Story🇧🇷

Two team members from Path of the Indies had to leave the recordings due to health problems. Actress Eva Todor, who played Dona Cidinha, and Glória Perez herself, who had to remove a lymform in her thyroid.
