17 Items That Ruin the Cozy Kitchen Concept

Back in the day, kitchens used to be just an area for cooking, separated from every other room in the house. People used them only to prepare food and then ate in the dining room or another room. Today, everything has changed: many times it is in the kitchen that we prepare and make meals, gather the family, receive guests and even work. For many, it is the most important place in the house, so it deserves a good decoration.

We, from incredible.club, we got tired of just looking at other people’s home interiors on the Internet and wanted to bring beauty into our own homes. For this, sometimes it is enough to get rid of a few things that make the space messy and prevent the conquest of the dreamed cozy home.

1. Products stored in a visible place

It is very convenient when potatoes and onions are within reach in the kitchen, but keeping them in nets or bags in the middle of the room is not a good idea. After all, this way we not only make the space dirty, but we run the risk of running out of stock. The fact is that potatoes spoil very quickly at room temperature and in direct sunlight, and they even lose some of their nutrients. Food that can stay out of the fridge should be stored in fruit bowls or baskets and never left exposed anywhere.

2. Windows without curtains

The right curtains can transform any room, and the kitchen is no exception. However, long fabric curtains are not a good idea for the space, as they absorb odors, get dirty easily and look unsightly over time. It is better to leave them to decorate the dining room. As for places where food is prepared, blinds or Roman blinds will be the best solution.

They’re pretty, easy to clean, and don’t look like an office. Avoid models made of cotton, linen, silk and other materials that do not tolerate moisture well, fade and shrink.

3. Vegetable gardens on the windowsill

4. Old and chipped cutting boards

Ideally, the kitchen should have two cutting boards: one for meat and one for vegetables. In addition, it is advisable to replace them immediately after the appearance of visible damage. It’s not just a question of hygiene, it’s also aesthetic, because boards with chips, cracks and grimy are not presentable. The high quality wooden ones give an air of elegance to the kitchen. They also won’t damage knives like glass and metal chopping boards and are more durable than bamboo chopping boards.

5. Stacks of Utensils on the Microwave

This mess spoils not only the decoration of the environment, but also the appliance itself. Objects piled on top of the microwave can prevent the door from closing properly or block the ventilation holes, preventing air circulation in the oven. If it is convenient for you to store household items in this area, buy a special microwave cover with pockets.

6. Unpresentable sugar bowls and spice containers

Spices need to be stored in airtight containers. Old jars and cans with loose lids do not meet this requirement and are not visually attractive. You don’t need to buy expensive spice racks to bring elegance to the table. There are many interesting economic options. For example, you can pour spices into glass jars and place them in a wooden box, or attach metal jars with labels to a magnetic board.

When it comes to sugar bowls, it’s best to opt for durable and beautiful materials like stainless steel and porcelain.

7. Shabby dishcloths

8. Detergents for dishes

There’s nothing wrong with detergent bottles, but they don’t make the kitchen cozy and stylish either. The dispensers matching the kitchen decor, in addition to being practical, make the environment visually more organized. Alternatively, the detergent can be stored in a special place under the sink where no one can see it.

9. Tea bags thrown around the kitchen

People who are in the habit of drinking tea sometimes end up leaving used tea bags near the sink or on kitchen surfaces, at the risk of staining them. To place the wet sachets while drinking, it is best to use a ceramic saucer.

10. Plastic containers of different sets

Some categories of plastics contain chemicals that may pose a health hazard (for example, the potentially dangerous but not yet fully studied bisphenol A). Also, most plastic pots are not durable. They are easily scratched, their surfaces darken and deform at high temperatures. And a bunch of containers piled up on the table, or even in the cupboard, ruins the decor of the room.

Glass containers are ideal for storing food. Stackable sets of pots of different sizes save space in the kitchen and are visually more beautiful.

11. Sponges and washcloths everywhere

You can’t avoid using them, but at least you can store them more neatly. The sponge holders are economical and instantly transform the entire look of the sink area. If it is deep, you can install a support inside it. There are models that can be attached directly to the inner side of the sink.

12. Unnecessary kitchen utensils

Many times we buy new kitchen utensils and forget to dispose of the old ones. Or else we think that one day we will need the second potato masher, the three wooden spoons and the half dozen spatulas hanging on the sink counter. Simply remove the duplicate fixtures and the space instantly changes appearance.

When you’re putting away utensils, ask yourself, “Do I use this?” or “Does it make my life more practical?” If the answer is no, then discard them. It’s also good to check all the drawers and get rid of everything you don’t use.

13. Bread Baskets

Baskets kind of match the kitchens, but let’s face it: exposed bread spoils faster and every time you move the basket, crumbs get all over the place. A good quality bread holder is both practical and beautiful. In addition, there are models with a removable bottom that allow you to collect all the crumbs.

14. Old oven mitts

Fabric oven mitts face many problems: they burn, grease, shed, and stain easily. In addition, its thermal protection is very weak. Silicone handles are much more practical in this regard, in addition to multiple color options.

We recommend models with lining on the inside, as they protect better against high temperatures and are more comfortable.

15. Pet dishes and saucers

Plates and saucers on the kitchen floor ruin the harmony of the room. Also, pets love to take the food out of the bowl and play with it.

We believe that the animals must have their own troughs, which prevent spilling food and water. You can also buy special non-slip mats to keep the bowls from being overturned.

16. Built-in wardrobes without plinth

Dirt and dust are more likely to accumulate under the kitchen cabinet, giving the impression that the area has not been cleaned in a while. You can solve this problem by installing a plinth under the cabinets. Even if this piece didn’t come with the original furniture, you can order it separately or make it yourself. And for those who want to make the most of the space under the furniture, it is also possible to install a drawer.

17. Minor visible imperfections

Even the little things like a burnt out light bulb, a constantly dripping faucet or a piece of wallpaper that has come loose can affect the look of the kitchen. In the case of the author of this post, the corners of his kitchen counter were unfinished and very visible. The change was instantly noticeable after the repair. The solution took just five minutes and required only a hot glue gun.
