15 Series that went on for a long time and ended up losing the chance to have a good ending

One of the highest-rated television series of all time, Game of Thrones, ended so badly that fans demanded a reshoot of the last season. To date, the initiative has gathered nearly two million signatures. And it makes sense, doesn’t it? When your favorite series ends, all you want is a decent ending, or at least one that has a logical ending, concluding all the plots of the story.

We, from awesome.club, we decided to make a list of 15 popular series that started well, gained a legion of fans, but ended up not living up to everyone’s expectations. And in the bonus, you still check out a series that held the attention of all viewers, but ended up repeatedly disappointing fans, with attempts at sequel and completion of the story. Check out!

sherlock (2010–2017)

The creators of the series, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, managed to successfully bring the famous character of Arthur Conan Doyle to our time. The series was a huge success and made Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman some of the UK’s most popular and in-demand actors. However, the fourth season met with mixed reviews and did not conclude the story so beloved by thousands of fans.

castle (2009-2016)

The ironic and charming writer Richard Castle became the partner of the serious and ambitious detective Kate Beckett. The public fell in love with this couple, who, again and again, got into trouble, putting themselves at the epicenter of incredible events. For seven years, the series managed to hold the audience, but the last season simply tired of viewers. The result was a decline in popularity and the end of the series.

True Detective (2014 — Present)

The first season of True Detective was a resounding success. The acting duo of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was acclaimed by critics and the series was considered one of the best of recent times. Critics hailed the production, which achieved an 87% approval rating. Unfortunately, the following seasons were not as successful. Although the third season received better reception than the second.

Prison Break: In search of the truth 🇧🇷Prison Break — 2005–2017)

While the first two seasons were popular with critics and viewers alike, the sequel Prison Break: In search of the truth it didn’t please everyone. “Even I, a fan of prison breakI started to see Monday nights as a burden”, concluded one of the critics of Entertainment Weekly.

Dexter — No Name Confidence 🇧🇷dexter — 2006–2013)

One of the most disappointing endings of all time was that of the series Dexter — No Name Confidence🇧🇷 The first season intrigued viewers and critics alike. However, from the sixth, the public began to lose interest in the plot. The final season hit a depressing 33% on Rotten Tomatoes🇧🇷 “No one and nothing could have prepared me for such slips in the end,” wrote James Quealley, a critic of the The Star-Ledger🇧🇷 Surprisingly, the showtime announced the return of the series.

Men in suit 🇧🇷Suits — 2011–2019)

Self-taught Mike Ross, owner of a brilliant memory, but who never finished law school, goes to work in one of the main law firms in New York, under the supervision of one of the best lawyers in Manhattan, Harvey Specter. Viewers fell in love with following the everyday lives of such smart jurists, but after the fifth season, the series’ ratings began to decline. After Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle left the production, it had to end. “Megan’s departure was already bad, the protagonist’s then… Although we stopped watching before that, it got boring”, commented the user RagDolly.

Big Little Lies (2017–2019)

The series was scheduled to run for just one season, and the story won over audiences. Many agree that Big Little Lies didn’t need a sequel. In a review of the second season, The Atlantic noted, “Nowadays, there are more series than ever before, which is why one with the privilege of featuring extraordinary actors shouldn’t be the most unlikely thing for many people: a disappointment.”

Grey’s Anatomy 🇧🇷Grey’s Anatomy — 2005 — Current)

This hospital drama about the lives of health professionals already has 17 seasons. Those who were born around the time of the pilot episode’s release must already be finishing high school. Faithful viewers have already experienced everything while following the series: the vicissitudes of the doctors’ personal lives, disasters and even the death of their favorite characters. In Season 13, interest in Grey’s Anatomy disappeared and the audience plummeted. “It was interesting until season 13. Then love stories reappear, but the actors don’t act with the same chemistry as before,” commented user Daria.

OC: A Stranger in Paradise (2003–2007)

The first two seasons of the youth drama received rave reviews from viewers. However, in the third, the show’s writers clearly had trouble bringing something new to the plot of Californian teenagers Ryan, Seth, Marissa and Summer, which caused a sharp drop in the series’ ratings.

Misfits (Misfits — 2009–2013)

Clever and politically incorrect, the series about several teenage misfits who gain superpowers after an electrical storm has attracted thousands of fans. However, after the third season, the audience’s interest began to wane. “I watched season one through season three and a few episodes of season four, which destroyed everything I loved about the show. Pretty much all of the original characters are gone, and I really liked them, so seeing the new faces being introduced into the plot killed the show’s chemistry. In my opinion, you don’t need to watch the fourth or fifth seasons, as the third ended very well,” wrote one of the fans of the series.

Once Upon a time 🇧🇷Era uma vez – 2011–2018)

In recent seasons, the series began to repeat itself. “The magic is gone,” concludes Mark Perigard in an article for the boston herald🇧🇷 Internet user Marissita agrees: “I couldn’t finish last season, despite having tried. It was a big mess. I mean, why did they do all that? I don’t understand…it just ruined the whole fairy tale experience”.

Gossip Girl: The Blog Girl (2007–2012)

The first seasons were a critical and popular success. However, with each subsequent season, the series lost its freshness. Intrigues, confused relationships between the characters, and new intrigues. Sooner or later, Blair, Serena, Nate, Chuck and the others had to grow out of the tight little world of gossip Girl🇧🇷 Few spectators waited until the end to discover the biggest mystery of the series (which was lost along the way). The critics’ rating on the Rotten Tomatoes dropped to 60% in season six.

13 Reasons Why (2017–2020)

A classic example of when producers should finish a series on time. The first season of 13 Reasons Why is intriguing from the first episode and raises sensitive social issues. The ending has a logical and brilliant conclusion to the story. So why three more seasons? Neither critics nor viewers found the answer to this question. The consequence was a low audience for the new seasons.

House of Cards (2013–2018)

The overwhelming success of the story of ambitious and calculating congressman Frank Underwood was a huge success for Netflix. Over many seasons, the producers have managed to keep ratings and ratings consistently high. However, the series finale disappointed many. “I don’t remember ever seeing a series end so horribly.” IMDb user sshesley shared his frustration.

Bonus: X file 🇧🇷The X Files — 1993–2018)

This epic series about the top secret investigations of FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder ran for nine seasons: from 1993 to 2001. After the eighth season, however, series star David Duchovny left the project. And the ninth ended up receiving a lot of negative comments from both specialized critics and fans. However, the producers did not accept the end very well, and tried to resume the project a few times, proposing to restart the story. In 2008, a feature film was released continuing the script of the series, called The X-Files: I Want to Believe, but the production ended up having little box office. To the surprise of fans, in 2016 and 2018 two more seasons of the series were released, in which Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny returned to their former roles. The series, however, did not take off and the fans’ nostalgic expectations were not met. Ratings were quite low, and after 16 episodes, the series was cancelled.
