In movies, everything is a matter of perspective. We cannot always trust our eyes and believe what we see on the screen in front of us. Whether it’s car chases, monster sequences or fantasy worlds, special effects are at the heart of movie magic. As we admire futuristic locations, flying dragons and massive spaceships, it’s easy to forget the hard work behind these scenes.
O incredible.club created a list of iconic films that used miniature structures to bring events and objects to life on the big screen. We had no idea that certain things that look huge could be so small!
1. Titanic
When completed, this 1/20 scale model was 13 meters and 56 centimeters long, and was used for most of the shots of the boat navigating the open sea. At that time, it was the most accurate and detailed model of the ship ever made.
two. THE Origin
For the realization of The Origin🇧🇷 by Christopher Nolan, New Deal studios produced, in a huge concrete structure, the effects of the explosive demolition of a hospital, from the film’s dream world, located on the edge of a snowy mountain. They also used over 2,000 pounds of salt to cover everything up like snow. The crew shot multiple shots of the explosion and used different tower models until Nolan was completely satisfied with the result.
3. Blade Runner 2049
for the movie Blade Runner 2049, production company Weta Workshop was responsible for creating and later filming several expansive miniature environments, including the Los Angeles cityscape, along with the massive LAPD tower. The team created intricate mini sets that were shot by director of photography, Alex Funke.
4. Blade Runner, the android hunter
Like its sequel, the original film used miniature models to create the dark atmosphere of the city. The team used incredibly detailed sets to bring the futuristic metropolis to life.
5. The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers
For the Tolkien universe, Weta Workshop developed a variety of perfectly detailed armor, weapons and location drawings for a variety of scenes, including Isengard, Saruman’s home and his army. Looking at things from this angle, it really doesn’t look as scary and impressive as it does in the movie.
Another recognizable location in the film is Helm’s Deep, a large valley within the stronghold of Rohan. One of the major battles between Saruman’s forces and Rohan took place there. But who would have guessed that it was such a small building?
6. The impossible
The impossible tells the true story of a family vacation in Thailand, at the moment when the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004 invades the place. To create the big wave, the crew on the set designed the bungalows and surrounding buildings to a 1:3 scale, and then an 80 by 100 meter water tank in the open air.
7. independence day
independence day, to a large extent relied on the miniature models and practical effects, as it contained 430 special effects shots. Supervisor Volker Engel said people in a restaurant were stunned to hear how he and his associates discussed the flight over the Capitol to the White House.
8. The Harry Potter Franchise
In 2012, the miniature model of Hogwarts Castle was unveiled and installed in the studio The Making Of Harry Potter, in Leavesden, UK, where tours are made to admire what is related to these films. 9. The ghost hunters
The Marshmallow Man was the last enemy faced by the Ghostbusters team in the movie. Of course, it was impossible to create a full-size model of the white sailor, so the director decided to use a miniature. The giant was basically a man in an inflated suit.
10. Back to the future 3
Did you think they made a real train push the car? Well, it wasn’t exactly like that. Not only Dr. Emmet Brown knew how to solve every little problem, but apparently the film’s directors also did their part by recreating the scene in miniature.
