Shaving your hair is an act that takes a lot of courage and is not always very well received in the showbiz world. The stars of today’s article did this either to play a role or for some more personal reason. But more importantly, none of them regretted it, and some made this transformation their trademark.
Today the awesome.club shows which women these are and tells what they said about this important moment in their lives.
1. Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada, star of the movie Girls Trip, has been battling hair loss for some time now, but she didn’t let this condition stop her from sharing beautiful photos on her Instagram account. “Alopecia and I will be friends… Period!” wrote the actress. “The only thing left for me now is to laugh. I’ve been struggling with alopecia for some time, until I suddenly saw this line. She appeared out of nowhere and I figured it’s going to be harder to hide. So I thought I’d tell, so no one asks questions,” the actress said in a video.
2. Kristen Stewart
The Twilight Saga actress admitted that she always wanted to have short hair, so she jumped right into the opportunity that came with her new film. “I’m doing a movie called Underwater in which I play a mechanical engineer working on an oil rig; that is, this hair is practical. I’ve been wanting to cut it for a long time. And that’s amazing,” said the actress.
3. Jessie J
Award-winning singer Jessie J shaved her head live on television to help raise money for a charity called Comic Relief. She then admitted that she would like to keep the new look for awhile: “I want to keep it like this for a while. I look like this on my album cover. I wanted to declare something with that. I feel like there’s no point in shaving your hair for charity if you’re going to let it grow out the next day.”
4. Dear Delevingne
The actress shaved her hair to play a cancer patient in the movie Life in a Year. Although her managers were against this decision, Cara Delevingne knew she needed to do it. “Before I even got the part, I told the director, ‘I want to shave my hair off.’ My managers said, ‘Please don’t! Why are you going to do this?’ In a role like this, especially when it comes to cancer, it’s important to feel what it’s like to have no hair,” said the actress.
5. Natalie Portman
The Oscar winner shaved her hair for the movie V for Vendetta. “I was on the scene the moment it happened. In that sense, it was a very traumatic experience. The character wasn’t choosing that. It was an obligation that took place through a very violent act,” said the actress. “In movies, we are always very spoiled. And we can always replay scenes, but that wasn’t the case. I just tried to stay focused and do my best work with the only chance I got.”
6. Adwoa Aboah
The model and activist explained her reasons for shaving her hair in a touching essay. “After many years of hating my hair, I finally felt no attachment to it. I felt strong and for the first time I didn’t have to carry a bag with a lot of products; and didn’t waste an hour trying to find hairpins after a party. Today I feel very comfortable and I am no longer afraid of looking different. I grew up and learned to enjoy feeling unique and not having long blonde hair,” she wrote.
7. Lupita Nyong’o
The Black Panther star admitted that she’s always had a hard time coming to terms with her natural hair. “For much of my teenage years I used chemicals in my hair. Keeping it ‘in order’ was almost a compromise for me. I remember doing crazy things, like sleeping without resting my head on the mattress so my curls wouldn’t be messy the next day. One day, my father joked, ‘Why don’t you just cut him off?’ A few months later, I walked into the salon and said, ‘Enough!’ It was a challenge for myself. Can I live without hair? I shaved it all off at that exact moment. It was scary, but at the same time liberating, because I went completely bald,” said the actress.
8. Halsey
To highlight her biracial identity, the Now or Never singer chose to shave her hair. “My hair has been a big indicator of racial issues in my life. It is one of the ultimate symbolic struggles for women of color. Shaving my head was important to me because I needed to prove that I could still love myself if I did that,” she stated.
9. Amber Rose
The School Dance actress decided to shave her hair, and the short, bleached blonde cut became her trademark for many years. Amber said her friends were against her decision to shave her hair, but she didn’t want to know: “My friends said, ‘Please don’t do that, Amber, you’re going to look crazy.’ I decided not to listen to anyone and went straight to the hairdresser.”
10. Amandla Stenberg
The award-winning actress admitted that shaving her hair helped her to accept herself. “In the beginning, I had really big, curly hair. I loved my blackness. When I got tired of this look, I cut my hair shorter. I was curious how this might affect people’s perception of my gender, so I kept cutting it shorter and shorter. I wanted a hairstyle that looked less feminine. And that was liberating. This summer I came out, and I must say that not having hair made me feel even more comfortable with my gender,” she revealed.
