15 Movie Endings That Many May Have Misunderstood

Often a movie’s ending remains a mystery to viewers, prompting heated debates and several alternative theories about its ending. On the one hand, we may simply not understand the exact meaning that the director wanted to convey with the ending or even misinterpret the message left at the end by the use of metaphors and ambiguous expressions. On the other hand, there is still the possibility that the understanding of the final scenes is guided directly by the viewer’s impressions of them, thus generating different opinions.

O awesome.club decided to get into this discussion and clarify the movie endings that are more difficult to understand, and it may even be that your understanding of the script changes completely. Check out!

The Arrival, 2016

As the story of Denis Villeneuve’s film develops, many hints are given to the viewer, however the main idea of the film is only revealed at the end. Science fiction drama is composed entirely of paradoxes in the form of time loops. Viewers may even think that the film begins by showing the past of the protagonist, the linguist Louise Banks, but in the end it is clear that the opening scenes actually depict her future. After Amy Adams’ character began to understand the non-linear temporal language of the aliens, time for her began to have another meaning, where past, present and future can be accessed in the form of time circles.

The flashback scenes depicting the linguist with her dead daughter and her separation from her husband, which we saw at the beginning of the film, have not actually happened in the protagonist’s life yet. Louise was able to see her future and, even though she knew she would lose her daughter and consequently her marriage would end, she decided not to change anything.🇧🇷 And that’s the main meaning of the film – time is not a simple straight line. When looking at time through the eyes of the aliens, it takes on an entirely different meaning, and each person has the ability to determine their own destiny.

Mom!, 2017

“They are super excited and understand everything, but each in their own way,” said actor Javier Bardem of the public’s reaction to the film he starred in. After the debut of director Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller, the internet was awash with different versions of the film’s meaning and interpretations of its ending. Virtually almost all of this director’s works are full of symbolism, and in Mother! it couldn’t be different. The plot is based on humanity’s degrading relationship with nature, and the film is a kind of biblical parable.

In an interview with Variety, Aronofsky explained that Javier Bardem acted in the long as God, actress Jennifer Lawrence gave life to mother nature, and the house they lived in represented planet Earth. Nature is degraded and exploited. And the apocalypse at the end of the film, more precisely the burning of the house, represents the result of man’s aggressive actions towards the planet.

Us, 2019

The film’s protagonists, the Wilson family, are being attacked and taken hostage by individuals identical to them. Soon the viewer discovers that the invaders are part of an army of clones called Trailers, who live in tunnels and underground passages. In the final part of the film, the protagonist played by Lupita Nyong’o follows her terrifying clone through a mirrored labyrinth that leads to a dungeon, which we are shown in fragments of scenes throughout the film. After a fight between the characters, we see a flashback to Adelaide’s full childhood and realize that she is actually a clone, who as a child managed to reach the surface and capture her original.

This plot twist explains the protagonist’s changes in behavior and her fears. In part, it’s clear why the adult Adelaide was afraid to go to the beach: she knew that the entrance to the “underground world” was still there and didn’t want to return. It is also possible to understand why the real Adelaide became the leader of the Trailers: she is the only member of them who has the ability to speak.

Birdman, 2014

The ending of Alejandro Iñárritu’s film about the fate of the Birdman is quite confusing. In the final scene, the protagonist Riggan Thomson’s daughter enters an empty room and sees an open window, through which voices and sirens can be heard from the street. Emma Stone’s character then looks down, slowly lifts her head to the sky and smiles. Some viewers might think that this frame represents a “happy ending” and suggests that Riggan could still fly. However, most likely is that the protagonist has committed suicide for not being able to fly, and that his daughter Sam has started to hallucinate him.🇧🇷

Sam loses his connection to the real world and plunges into a fantasy world where his father is still alive. Riggan’s relationship with his daughter is the key to unlocking the film’s ending.

Vanilla Sky, 2001

By the minute, director Cameron Crowe’s psychological thriller becomes more confusing, culminating in a finale that leaves the audience in a state of complete bewilderment. Almost without hesitation, David chooses the former.

The Cure, 2017

Lockhart, in the end, manages to defeat Volmer and escape along with his daughter Hannah. A fight ensues between the characters, and Nina ends up killing Lily by sticking a piece of glass in her belly. Then the protagonist hides the body in the bathroom and heads to perform the second act.

During the intermission before the third act, when Nina again returns to her dressing room, Lily alive and healthy goes to meet the protagonist to express her admiration for her. Natalie Portman then understands that she fought herself all that time in the dressing room and discovers the wound from the shard of glass in her own stomach.🇧🇷 At the end of the film, at the end of the third act, Nina falls bleeding to death in the director’s arms. From the reaction of the theater staff and workers, it is clear that the ballerina was injured in an attempt to achieve perfection.

Bird Box, 2018

When the protagonist and her two children finally arrive at the Sanctuary, it reveals itself to be a school for the visually impaired, and there is deep symbolism in that. It was the blind faith of finding him that encouraged Malorie and helped her through all obstacles blindfolded. The film leads the viewer to reflect on what is really weakness and what is strength. Blindness is considered in society as a factor that limits opportunities and capabilities, but in the film’s plot it is represented as a way of defending oneself from monsters and becoming strong.

The story captivates and holds the protagonist, played by Amy Adams, from its first pages and she realizes that Edward is a really talented writer. Because of her impressions of the book, Susan suggests to her ex-husband that they meet, and he immediately agrees.

The incredible romance and ill-fated encounter are actually Edward’s way of getting revenge on his ex-wife. Thus, he proved to Susan that her inner creative world, initially discredited by her, is much richer than she thought. Revenge is the central theme of both stories: Tony takes revenge on his family’s killers and Edward takes revenge on Susan.🇧🇷

Donnie Darko, 2001

Despite the film having premiered 18 years ago, discussions about its true meaning still continue to this day. According to director Richard Kelly, the protagonist, Donnie Darko, has the role of a hero whose mission is to save the world. Donnie must return an artifact, which is an airplane jet turbine, that fell from the sky in the city of Middlesex, otherwise it would create a black hole and cause the end of the world.
