15 Latin soap operas and series that took us to other times

Soap operas have the power to take us to other times; they make us witnesses of great love stories and hold us from beginning to end with intrigue, betrayal and revenge. But period novels also have another very important function: teaching. They take us back to other decades — or even centuries — and through their setting and costumes, they show us what life was like at other times in our history.

1. alondra (1995)

The novel narrates the adventures of a young liberal who does not fit the feminine models imposed by society at the beginning of the 20th century. Unlike the other women, raised to be housewives, the protagonist of this story wants to study and be independent; a way of thinking that was not tolerated by the society of the time. And it is in this process of struggle and self-discovery that she falls in love with a married man.

two. xica da Silva (1996)

Based on the true story of a Brazilian slave who obtained her freedom, the telenovela takes the viewer directly to the 18th century. Everything happens in Arraial do Tijuco, today Diamantina, at a time when there was a huge extraction of diamonds. The story reveals the rise of the slave Xica da Silva and presents, for the first time in the history of Brazilian television, a black protagonist (Taís Araújo).

A beautiful story with a breathtaking cast.

The context is the tense moment experienced by California after the war between the United States and Mexico, in 1847. After spending her childhood and youth in a convent, Ramona returns home and on the way meets Alejandro, from the Yahi tribe, with whom she falls in love. . She must face rejection from her own family and tribe from the man she loves.

During the years of Spanish rule in Mexican lands, a young woman marries a man who does not love her. Time passes and true love arrives in the protagonist’s life, but the obstacles for the couple to be together are infinite. In addition to a romantic plot, this novel also brings some important historical data, including the Holy Inquisition.

10. Zorro: The Sword and the Rose (2007)

When the revolution threatens to end Spanish rule in California, a hero takes matters into his own hands and leaves a famous mark on everything he conquers: the letter Z. Nobody knows that Diego de la Vega, a well-educated young man, is the owner of Zorro’s identity. While fighting villains, he falls in love with the beautiful Esmeralda, a relationship that will lead him to even more difficult battles.

The story takes place in 1740 and brings the love between a pirate known as “El Antillano” and a young woman who is bought by an old millionaire. The two will have to face many obstacles to be together, among them the complicated past of the protagonist.

12. Corazon Salvaje (2009)

This novel is the fourth adaptation of a story that takes place in Veracruz, Mexico, also in the 19th century. It is also a remake from the novels Yo I buy this Mujer and Corazon Salvaje, from 1990 and 1993, respectively. Young Juan wants to avenge his mother’s death, but he falls in love with the daughter of the man he hates. Aimeé, the woman he falls in love with, marries another man. To complicate matters, Regina, Aimeé’s twin sister, enters the scene and makes the plot even more complex.

13. Screams of Death and Libertad (2010)

This series has 12 episodes and portrays the time when Mexico fought for freedom. History was written with the help of many historians, who focused on the period from 1808 to 1821, but it also brings a series of fictional data.

14. La Pola (2010)

The novel is inspired by real events that occurred during the independence of Colombia and narrates the love and political adventures of Policarpa Salavarrieta, La Pola, a brave woman who preferred to die than surrender to the power of men. The entire plot takes place in the 19th century, at a complicated time in the country’s history. It is during this period that love is born between La Pola and Alejo Sabaraín, a relationship that drew a lot of public attention.

15. The Hotel de los Secretos (2016)

The story takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, in a famous Mexican hotel. A young man starts working at the hotel to investigate his sister’s mysterious disappearance. In the process, he meets the hotel’s heiress, who comes to help him. As their love blossoms, long-hidden secrets are uncovered.
