Motherhood represents a 180° change in a woman’s life. “Adapting to the role for the first time is complicated. We have never experienced anything like this. The fears, the doubts, the tiredness… It’s a festival of emotions and news!” These are the words of Mamen Jiménez, a psychologist who lives in Madrid, Spain, and who talks about how transforming the experience of being a mother is. We spoke with Mamen and she said that her father’s work as an artist helped her explore this new stage of her life. Her Instagram name is Lapsicomami and there she explains very well what she thinks about all these subjects.

Reflections

They want us to be supermoms. We are asked to raise our children as if we don’t work and to work as if we don’t have children. These unreal goals do us a lot of harm, because they are impossible. And in an attempt to accomplish the impossible, we become exhausted. Let’s be realistic, we are human! And it’s okay not to handle something, because it’s impossible to do everything.

Take care of yourself, this is important. Of course we love our children, and that’s a priority, but we must also take care of ourselves. Our state of mind, our self-esteem and our well-being depend (among other things) on how we eat. The house is important, the clothes are important, the routine is important, but so are we.

One thing that helps a lot is making a realistic schedule. Write down what we rationally want to do the next day and what is possible to do, nothing more than that. By doing this, we feel great satisfaction at the end of the day. But if we make a huge list of things, at the end of the day we will be frustrated because we can’t complete what we had in mind, and that feeling is always bad.
